Bacon wars

A sign on a lamp post at the bottom of the Winooski Circle displayed the words “Yield [for] Sneakers Bacon” until Friday morning. The bistro owners took it down.

It got there as part of “Operation Bloom,” a city program put in place to keep its flower beds beautiful. If businesses do some gardening they can post an advertisement where they do it, but the word “bacon” on the Sneakers Bistro sign started a discussion about diversity on the Winooski Front Porch Forum. It started with a post from one woman who wrote that the sign was insensitive to those who do not consume pork. She said as a vegan living in a Muslim household she is personally offended by it.

She can be offended all she wants, but she has no right to expect a censorship of what she doesn't like or what a religious minority of the population she belongs to doesn't like. If someone had an ad with a muslim crescent moon on it, would she be happy if another woman had it removed because it offended that person's brand of religion? - yeah rite!

Another example of the power of PC. The power that will remove any semblance of free speech in this country.

funny how Jews, with the same dietary restriction, never make a big deal out of it, EVER.

PC at its finest!

A Catholic priest, Peter Smit and a rabbi are seated next to one another on a plane. During the flight, the priest says, "Tell me, rabbi, is it still a requirement of the Jewish faith that you do not eat pork?"
"That is the case, yes," says the rabbi.
"But tell me, did you ever get tempted - did it ever appeal so much that you couldn't resist and decided to see what, say, bacon tasted like?" the priest goes on.
"Yes, father, there was one occasion when, as a young man, the smell of bacon became too much of a temptation and I tasted it," the rabbi admits.
"And how did you find it?" asks the priest.
"Well, says the rabbi, "Since we are both men of God and being honest with one another, I must confess it was excellent. I enjoyed it very much. But I never ate it ever again."
The priest sits back, looking smug. Later during the flight, the rabbi says to the priest, "Tell me, father - is it still a requirement of your own faith that you do not have sexual intercourse?"
"Why yes," says the priest, "That is indeed true."
"But were you ever tempted, even once, to see what sexual intercourse is like?" the rabbi continues.
"Well, as you were so honest with me, I must confess that indeed, once, when I was a young man, I did have sexual intercourse with a woman," the priest tells him.
"Beats the hell out of a bacon sandwich, doesn't it?" says the rabbi.

Quote:

As silly as we think the sign is, Sneakers Bistro has the right to put the sign up.

The Muslim woman has the right to say that she is offended. She has the right to not go to the restaurant because she is offended.

Sneakers has the right to take down the sign and say their reasons.

People have the right to disagree with Sneakers’ decision and the reasoning behind it. Those same people have the right to not go to the restaurant because they are “offended” by the sign removal.

That’s the thing about freedom and speech – someone is going to be offended at something almost all the time.

It’s not complicated at all.

Either you support the idea of the exchange of ideas and thoughts, or your support the suppression of those thoughts and ideas.

You either support freedom or tyranny.

Your choice.

No one has asked the question, why is she offended by the word "bacon"? I get she is vegan and muslim. So why is she offended by a word on a cafe? I can see it if someone shoved it in her face. Is she so weak and lacking in self control she can't resist the call of bacon?

Under free speech she does not have the right to not be offended.

If I get offended by the sight of a Mosque, Will they tear it down?

Funny, if a Christians complains about something they are told to sit down and shut up!

I wonder why people are so easily intimidated by muslims? Could it be because christians don't blow you up for insulting them?
