US Marine Corps afraid of social networking sites

Surely only Milquetoast warriors would think Facebook or Twitter is a "high risk" threat. What is it when someone points a gun at you? The top brass are shaming their men with this nonsense.
"Citing security concerns, the United States Marine Corps has issued an order banning access to social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter on its network for the next year. The Pentagon is now reviewing its social networking policy for the entire Department of Defense, which should be completed by the end of September, according to a report from CNN.

The policy for the entire military is somewhat fragmented, as the Army ordered military bases to allow access to social media sites in May, according to Wired. … The Marine Corps order noted that social networking sites ‘in general are a proven haven for malicious actors and content and are particularly high risk due to information exposure, user generated content and targeting by adversaries.’”

Right. Because we want people to be posting where and when they are being deployed. We want them to be posting TAD's and other movements of personnel.

Get a clue.

I think NOT to have this policy would be insane, but oh so typical of this anti-American, anti-military administration. Isn't having our military plans and secrets on the front page of the NY Slimes enough?

I'm waiting for someone to do an indepth study to see how many serious crimes can be attributed to all the personal info these fools put on such web sites. Every stupid idea usually ends up blowing-up in the faces of Americans. Eventually, this facebook/twitter/twatter, etc. will be no different. It's just an electronic form of crack that's making a few people VERY rich. But you're not one of those few. Chances are, you're just a user. Just remember what happens to all the crack users in the end.

Anon 3:39 - It is conservative ideology that makes "a few people VERY rich"

Anon 3:17, conservative ideology has made even the "poor" in the US richer than a good part of the rest of the world. Liberal Socialist ideology has made middle class people poor in every country it has been tried in.

The old trickle down theory - where the rich piss on the poor.

Members of the military are subjected to different rules than the rest of us. For example, they can't do porn, not even erotic pictures without facing a dishonorable discharge, they have to mantain certain standards and keep certain secrets. Facebook, myspace and twitter would allow a disgrunted marine to reach hundreds if not thousands of people. Then the military would be forced to spend resources monitoring social networking sites. I think it makes sense to ban it.

"The old trickle down theory - where the rich piss on the poor."

Just remember, it is the Democrats who made them poor, and keep them poor.

The grunts are using these sites like a Whore House menu.

Can't say I blame them. I was a horny LCpl many, many moons ago and I'd fuck a snake if you held its ears.

But in those days the act of fornicating one's brains out was on a different level. Walk into house of ill-repute. Bargin with mamasan. Hit the rack and smack the crack.

With these "social networking sites" there is too much of a chance that the individual will discredit himself and the Marine Corps.

And with "The Dear Leader" as Commander-in-Chief the Commandant of the Marine Corps doesn't need another "A" Range target plastered to his back!

This policy has nothing to do with free speech and everything to do with security. These social networking sites they are making a policy against visiting are currently a favorite vector for introducing malware onto other people's computers.

The military simply wants their personnel to stay away from those kinds of sites while working on their military computers. They've already stated that it's ok for their people to visit those sites using their own computers, just not with the ones belonging to the military.

Anon 3:17 -- Show me a poor man who provides jobs for people. You can't because it's the rich and the middle class who want to be rich who will create jobs which the poor will then use to lift themselves out of poverty.

You don't have even a small clue about how the world works do you?

I agree that to not have this policy would be insane. If the sites aren't secure (and recent events suggest they are not), then it makes sense to forbid military computers to visit those sites. That doesn't prevent military personnel from accessing Twitter and Facebook on their own personal computers. You can always depend on conservatives to present only part of the story.
