"Sexist" to advise modesty?

A Pennsylvania High School has been slammed for using degrading and sexist language in a letter warning graduating seniors to wear appropriate dress to an awards ceremony.

Biglerville High School, just north of Gettysburg, caused an uproar when it issued a letter advising female students to 'choose modest attire' and keep 'the girls' - a euphemism for breasts - covered and supported.

The startling letter also stated: 'Please remember as you select an outfit for the awards assembly that we don't want to be looking at sausage rolls. As you get dressed, remember that you can't put 10 pounds of mud in a five-pound sack.'  [Probable translation:  Fatties should not wear tight clothes]

While the school, which has about 500 students, warned female students against tight clothing, it only advised boys to wear nice clothes and avoid low-hanging pants.

Former Principal Richard Sterner, who retired earlier this school year, told Daily Mail Online that he had apologized to his students on Wednesday during graduation practice.

It's only a "double standard" if you pretend there are not differences between the sexes. Boys react to appearance differently than girls. The common choices made regarding inappropriate dress tend to be different too. Those guidelines directly address what students tend to do. Can anyone seriously claim that guys don't tend to dress in the ways the guidelines describe?

The guys' guidelines where than that should dress like "Jake … from State Farm", or as close to it as you can get. It's hard to imagine how guys could go wrong following that. It's also really hard to imagine telling girls the same thing, giving the much wider creativity and variance in women's clothing.

While there is some discussion on being "sexist" in this letter / directive, the real question to me is "how in the world did a school principle sending graduates off into the world think that this was professional in any way?"

This is what our school teachers and administrators think is appropriate?

This guy is talking about dressing appropriately for the somewhat formal occasion and yet feels compelled to write in a manner befitting a frat / sorority party?

Yes, the language and the "offense" from the language is one part of the story, but the bigger issue is who is teaching our kids and their lack of standards and professionalism.

Maybe they should go towards all equal dress codes. All slacks, same polo cut shirts, shoes, and no makeup or jewelry.

Anon 4:47 is yet another right wing person that hates the education system. Probably flunked out in the 10th grade.

Frannie Goldsmith is another left wing feminazi trying to sterilise the education system and churn out future comrades. Heaven forbid that the sexes interact by allowing their hormones to direct their dress sense.

Frannie Goldsmith,

I am always amused by people who try to target the education of others and yet cannot make a complete sentence. ("Probably flunked out in the 10th grade.")

If you are the product of the education system, you just made my point about its failings and lack of professionalism.

Its people like Frannie that developed the Super Flu to begin with and set things in motion to ensure its eventual release. School is over rated anyway. I dropped out in the 6th grade and I turned out fine.
