UK: Must not compare homosexual rights to ISIS

Coleen Nolan has sparked widespread controversy after clumsily comparing gay rights to supporting ISIS during a discussion on Loose Women.

She made the comments during a panel discussion on the recent gay cake row in Northern Ireland.

Nolan’s statements, in which she made a jumbled attempt to defend the rights of businesses to refuse clients because of their beliefs, have now sparked outrage on social media.

Coleen provoked the backlash when she compared a hypothetical situation in which an ISIS supporter asked for an ISIS cake from a baker with the recent controversy over gay rights in Northern Ireland.

‘What if somebody walked in and said: “Right, I want a cake and I want the whole Islamic State on it – and how I support it, and how I support them killing our people. Because it is a business do they have to make it?” she asked.

Many have called for the agony aunt and TV personality to resign while others have simply demanded an apology.

Coleen does not have to apologize at all. She just needs to continue what she is saying. Her stupidity will be brought out quite nicely. No one will take her seriously about anything she says. Laughter is the best medicine when directed at her.

Coleen and her risible comparison has a like-minded poster commenting earlier on this very site, but instead of ISIS used the example of making a cake for the KKK or a nazi party (refer).

I don't see anywhere the Homosexuals going after Islamic owned bakeries or florists for refusing to service their gay weddings. I wonder why it's only white, Christian owned businesses they go after?

She makes a legitimate point. If one group must be served regardless of personal/religious beliefs, so should every other.

7:36 There are very few gay clubs and bars that refuse entry to non-gays since anyone can lie about being gay, and few people would have some ID proving they were gay. Some such social venues may be private membership clubs but they are not pretending to be otherwise such as offering a service to the general public and then turning customers away on the basis that they don't fit religious criteria not previously stated or made clear.

Does that mean I can go into an Islamic food place and demand pork? I don't think so. But is that also refusal of service on religious grounds? In Australia we have MacDonald's takeaways who refuse to serve pork. As far as I am concerned if it is on their nation menu then I have a right to order it regardless off the wishes of the franchise. If gays can walk in to any cake shop an order a cake the I can walk into any MacDonalds and order bacon on my food regardless of the wishes of the local population.

12:55 Clearly if pork products are not already on the local menu in question, then it's pointless as well as pathetic to demand it be given to you; any more than demanding a giraffe burger. If cake was already on the menu and still available to customers, then Gays should not be refused to buy it, any more than blacks or Jews or any specified social group. Your attitude is worryingly fascist! (Or just go argrue with the McDonalds HQ on their franchise arrangements.)
