WA: State pols weigh “In God We Trust” plaque

Should “In God We Trust” adorn the chambers of Washington state’s Pierce County Council?

That’s the apparently controversial question facing council members on Tuesday, a day after a council committee decided to bring the proposal to a vote of the full seven-member council, the Tacoma News Tribune reports. Councilman Jim McCune, the Republican sponsor of the measure, said the national motto is inspiring and patriotic — and he’s unclear why the proposal has created such controversy.

“’In God We Trust’ is universal,” he told the newspaper. “It doesn’t have ‘In Muhammad We Trust,’ it doesn’t have ‘In Jesus We Trust.’”

Council Chairman Dan Roach said most of the 20 emails he read as of Monday opposed displaying a plaque emblazoned with the motto, which has reportedly become part of a national movement in local government buildings, with nearly 400 cities and counties in 23 states voting to display the motto.

Councilmembers Connie Ladenburg, D-Tacoma, and Rick Talbert, D-Tacoma, both oppose the idea, saying it isn’t inclusive.

McCune, meanwhile, is defending his proposal.  “I’m not doing this for taking a stand or making a point,” he told the Tacoma News Tribune. “I’m doing this because it is our national heritage.”

Is the US a theocracy or a would-be one? As for "heritage" those insignia largely date only to the 1950s during the Cold War against the "ungodly" Communists.
Today's citizens of the USA don't just consist of theists, even if those who do believe in "God" could even agree on what "God" actually meant, so it becomes a legally and constitutionally meaningless term!

If it is meaningless, what does it hurt?

"In Big Government We Trust." The only proper motto for statists and statist minons everywhere.

Wow Jerry! So if it's okay to have meaningless insignia that doesn't hurt, why not have say "In Godiva We Trust" - ?

Liberals oppose any form of relegious display especialy when it comes to the leftists ACLU

That State has more communists in it now. They have an aversion to any display of faith. It seems that vampires and Marxists have a few things in common, they leach life from people, and have a violent negative reaction to faith.

Anon (5:20) - Roget tells me that something meaningless is insignificant, trivial, inconsequential and unimportant.

Sounds to me that you've decided it isn't meaningless after all. And that's the point. It isn't meaningless. You just don't like its meaning.

Jerry - the meaning of "God" is so vague that it is in effect meaningless.

4:17 Define God.

God is everything that we do not know. God is getting smaller each and every day.

Anon (4:04) - When someone says the meaning of God is "vague," implies that it cannot be defined, or claims its meaning is "getting smaller... every day" it sounds to me like they are saying God can mean whatever you want it to mean.

Given that, is the real objection to the use of the word "God" or to my belief in its meaning?

Liberals want to soon replace the picture of George Washington on the state flag of the state of Washington with that of Che or Karl Marx

Man invented God in order to deal with infinity.

I think that Communists are Godly. After all, they do inflict pain and suffering on all they touch.

Perhaps the Atheists want it changed to 'in Darwin we trust'.

Jerry, it's not all about you - as to what you believe is a suitable definition of "God". It's supposed to mean the same thing to everyone in the USA, but clealy it can't, so it is in effect meaningless and pointless to use as a national motto.

Interesting. By that logic it follows that calling someone a "racist" is meaningless since Americans obviously don't agree on its meaning. Someone please inform the left that "You're a racist" can no longer be their motto.

Yes "racist" has become a meaningless word through constant misuse/abuse and to mean whatever you want it to mean, just like the term "God".

9:33 PM is obviously too ignorant to realize that *atheism* has nothing to do with Darwin, and that many *theists* would certainly trust the truthfulness of Darwin's work (as far as it went in his day).

INCLUSIVE!? was the dinner for ramadamn that obama just had inclusive? did they have Jews there or gays? Liberals routinely exempt themselves from inclusiveness
