British Leftist politician accused of 'trivialising the Holocaust' after comparing the Gaza Strip to a concentration camp

The overfed slob concerned

I suppose Germany's Jews in the 1930s must have been firing hundreds of rockets at their gentile neighbors

John Prescott was last night accused of being ‘deeply offensive’ to Jewish people by comparing the Gaza Strip to a concentration camp.

The leaders of Britain’s Jews criticised the comments by the former deputy prime minister, saying they ‘trivialised’ the Holocaust and called on Labour officials to investigate his ‘misconduct’.

Lord Prescott wrote in the Sunday Mirror that Israel’s ‘indiscriminate’ bombardment of the Palestinian territory was a war crime and that Gaza was a ‘ghetto’.

Some six million Jews were killed by the Nazis during the Second World War, many in concentration camps, while many more were confined to ghettos in major cities such as Warsaw.

Writing about Hamas, Lord Prescott said: ‘Israel brands them terrorists, but it is acting as judge, jury and executioner in the concentration camp that is Gaza.

‘What happened to the Jewish people at the hands of the Nazis is appalling.

'But you would think those atrocities would give Israelis a unique sense of perspective and empathy with the victims of a ghetto.’

The article provoked a stinging response from Vivian Wineman, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and Mick Davis, chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council.

In a letter to Opposition Chief Whip Lord Bassam, they said: ‘Comparing Gaza to a concentration camp and a ghetto is deeply offensive.

'The systematic and premeditated slaughter of the Holocaust cannot in any way be compared to the conflict in Israel and Gaza.’

They added: ‘Through his remarks, Lord Prescott has trivialised the Holocaust, the most painful memory in Jewish history, and will undoubtedly encourage others to use such language.

'We trust that there are formal party processes to deal with such misconduct.’

Yeah! Completely unarmed, law-abiding citizens who were so docile they walked into the gas chambers under their own power are exactly like heavily armed murderous thugs firing rockets at their neighbors, kidnapping, torturing, and beheading their neighbors, and actively planning genocide.

Exactly the same, except for, well… everything.

The guy is an outright idiot.

The intent is not persuade but to signal weaklings that dissent will not be tolerated.

Some Jews believe that they are above criticism because of what happened 60 years ago.
Some people cannot comprehend that many Westerners see what is coming out of Gaza and see a tragedy of epic proportions.
Some Israelis can't see that we expect more of them than we do of Hamas and feel that such judgement is unfair.
Some Jews can't see that they are fighting a David versus Goliath battle - but this time they are Goliath.
The whole thing is just heartbreaking.
And this is coming from someone who is a supporter of Israel - but who cannot support everything they do.

6:01 What would you recommend besides sitting quietly while terrorist rain rockets on them?

Be careful of WWII comparisons. Winston Churchill and Air Marshal, Arthur `Bomber` Harris were a proponents of saturation bombing of German cities.

Just love the disproportionate response argument.
Apparently it's OK to kill a certain number of aggressors, if you sustain a "proportionate" number of casualties in doing so. This bit of lunacy brought to you by the great minds at the UN.

The way to minimize the number of deaths is to win. Win decisively. Win overwhelmingly. And the hard, cold truth is that when one is dealing with fanatics it may be necessary to wipe them out completely.

Don't think so? Witness Harry Truman's decision to drop two A bombs, which eliminated the need to invade the Japan. Horrific? Yes. Saved millions of lives in the long run? Absolutely.

1:16 AM The slight flaw in your argument is that you may find your opponent has the better means to eliminate you, so it's a bit of a gamble, which is the essence of warfare in the first place, having "placed your bets".

Anon 6:01 - Your lack of a response shows your true color. You have NO answer at all because the only reasonable answer is what Israel is doing.

Remember those Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas to lead them. Remember those Palestinians in Gaza teach their children to hate Jews from their infancy.

Remember those Palestinians in Gaza are mostly supporters and members of Hamas.

Remember those Palestinians in Gaza ASKED for what is happening to them by failing to reform, as long as they cling to their hatred and continue to keep trying to destroy Israel and kill all the Jews they deserve to have these horrors of war in their lives.

Failure to recognize those facts is to refuse to wake from your ignorance.

The biggest farce is the outgoing head of the UNHRC has declared Israel to be war criminals because they didn't offer Iron Dome to Hamas to protect their citizens.
It is time for all civilised countries to withdraw from the UNHRC and continue leave it to be run by the biggest human rights violators on the planet.
