Parents protest over head teacher who 'banned mentioning Christmas and David Beckham'

More than half the teachers at a primary school have resigned in protest at a controversial new superhead who once banned children mentioning Christmas or David Beckham because it distracted them from work.

King's Farm Primary School in Gravesend, Kent, has around 15 teachers and 27 teaching assistants, but 25 of them have announced they will not be returning after the summer holidays.

Parents have been up-in-arms since January when new head teacher Jane Porter, who is also in charge of nearby Whitehill Primary School, was drafted in to King's Farm Primary School by Kent County Council.

Mrs Porter hit the headlines in November last year after she 'banned' all 515 children at Whitehill Primary School from mentioning Christmas before December the 1st. The head said that children would lose their ‘golden time’ if the festivities were mentioned before December. She also banned mentioning David Beckham unless it was in the context of lessons.

I don't see what the big deal is. She is just preparing the future workers for the people to be able to live under the totalitarian communist system that she and the rest of her leftist friends have been working to bring about.

I actually think she's right. There has been a constant creep of the Christmas season further back until sometimes it creeps up next to Halloween. This is especially true when the economy is poor they try and milk the holiday for all its worth. This sounds like pushback to make Christmas time more special, more traditional and keep the burn out to a minimum.

I agree with 4:27.
Actually the Christmas season should start with the first Sunday in Advent, about four weeks before Christmas Day. Indeed, 'Advent' itself means the 'coming' (of Christ/mas).

I also agree with Anon 4:27 - except I wouldn't resort to banning or punishing children for breaking the rule.

I got the same impression as 4:27. Can we have this lady find a way to prevent stores from putting up Christmas displays before Thanksgiving?

While I understand the desire to constrain the time companies start hawking wares for Christmas, what gives this woman the right to tell anyone that they can't talk about whatever they want?

I realize that this took place in England, but here in the US this would be a blatant abuse of power and First Amendment rights.

I can see no good out of a principal banning topics of conversation between students.

If the conversation is disruptive, that is one thing. However, her ban is not "content neutral" and is an attempt to flex her muscles.

There is no way this ban should be allowed.
