An Army veteran in Wisconsin will be allowed to display an American flag only until Memorial Day

It's "likely to offend"
"Dawn Price, 27, of Oshkosh, Wis., said she received a call from officials at Midwest Realty Management early Wednesday indicating that she and her husband, Charlie, would be allowed to continue flying the American flag they've had in their window for months through the holiday weekend. The couple had previously been told they had to remove the flag by Saturday or face eviction due to a company policy that bans the display of flags, banners and political or religious materials.

"It's basically an extension so we can fly the flag on Memorial Day," Price told FoxNews.com. "It does need to come down after that."

Charlie Price, 28, served tours of duty as a combat engineer in Iraq and Kosovo, his wife said. To honor his eight years of service, she began decorating their apartment during Veterans Day in November. An American flag topped off the display, she said.

Veterans' groups were furious at the realtors' refusal to allow the flag to fly. "As a veteran, it sickens me that the Dawn and Charlie Price's building management company would imply that the American flag could be construed as offensive by their residents," said Ryan Gallucci, a spokesman for AmVets.

Officials at Midwest Realty Management, which manages Brookside Apartments, where the Prices live, did not return several messages seeking comment. In a statement to the Oshkosh Northwestern, company officials said the policy was established to provide a consistent living environment for all residents.

"This policy was developed to insure that we are fair to everyone as we have many residents from diverse backgrounds," the statement read. "By having a blanket policy of neutrality we have found that we are less likely to offend anyone and the aesthetic qualities of our apartment communities are maintained."

Anybody who is offended by the American flag in America shouldn't be in America. Try Canada.

Following is a notice from the Reality Company. In my opinion it should have never even come to this point. The Reality Company in my opinion is still embarrassment to the people of Wisconsin.

Notice
We are pleased to announce that we have come to a mutual agreement with the Prices that allows them to keep their American flag in its original location.

We would like to apologize to the Prices and to all American veterans. It was never our intention to hurt the Prices or disrespect what Mr. Price and all veterans have sacrificed for each and every one of us.

We have learned from this situation and will be revising our policy to allow our residents to honor America and display the American flag in a manner similar to the Prices.

Again we apologize to the Prices and anyone else who was offended by our actions. It is our sincere hope that our apology will be accepted and the changes we are making will be beneficial to our company and our residents.

Sincerely Midwest Realty Management

Apparently, public pressure works, even with anti-Americans. While this country is still America, (and it won't be much longer) obstructing anyone from displaying this country's flag in a manner that is not insulting or disrespectful to the country, should be a federal crime.

I can't really fault them for this. My apartment building has the same rule: anything covering a window must be blinds or curtains. Nothing else. It's to make the building look good.

It's "ensure", not "insure".

Anon 2:46: You live in an apartment which is NOT your property. This veteran lives in a condominium which, by the nature of condominiums, he owns at least the interior of the living space, including where the flag is flown.

I wonder what would have happened if he had instead placed a flag on a table in view through the window? Would that have been considered offensive as well?

If ANYONE is offended by a United States citizen flying a flag on United States soil, they really need to shut the f*ck up and move somewhere else that is less offensive to them. Stop preventing us from doing those things which we have Constitutional rights to do!

I'm quite offended that those realtors would have any consideration for people who are offended by their own nation's flag...

It's to maintain the decor, is it?

Then I must presume that gangsta pants are also banned, otherwise Midwest Realty's current explanation would be no more than an obvious sham.

it depends who owns the property.

"it depends who owns the property."

It doesn't. It's about the 1st ammendment, the sanctity of the home, common sense, and someone's hatred of his own country pitted against someone's love of that same country.

My feeling is if a management company has problem with a american flag being shown in an appropriate manner then the management companies business license should be pulled

There is a problem here. The flag is not being shown in an appropriate manner.

Take a look at the picture in the cited article. Notice how the field of blue is to the left as you look at the flag from inside of the apartment.

That is not the correct way to display the flag.

It's backwards.

http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html

"(i) When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street."

These condominium associations, cooperative associations, and residential real estate management associations are the new Nazi's. The people in charge are usually older people who have moved there from other areas, and who have nothing else in life but to become Storm Troopers and dictate their (usually politically motivated) will on others.

That is not to say that some rules shouldn't apply when living in one of these "camps", but those rules should be rational and sensible, and not designed to appease the political whims of the few.

In spite of what these people think, and in spite of what the Marxist in the White House is doing, this is still America. Well, for the time being, anyway.

Patriotism has its place of course, and the flag of a country is a symbol that should be respected as such; but the physical object is not a holy relic, and if some crazy or foreigner burns that flag or stamps on it, there's no need to react with ire, and of course nowhere near as badly as the moslems who went so beserk over the danish cartoons - simply react with cool distain!
