Department store chain refuses to pull sexist 'Trophy' shirt from stores

Popular retailer Target has refused to stop selling a ‘sexist’ T-shirt which markets women as ‘trophies’ and is allegedly being marketed in stores to teenage girls – despite facing a bitter online backlash – with a spokesperson claiming that women of all ages ‘love’ the controversial item.

Outraged customers have been flooding social media with threats to boycott the T-shirt – and the store – while Change.org user, Amanda R. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, started a petition last month for Target to 'Stop Selling Sexist "Trophy" Shirt That Demeans Women', explaining that the shirt's message encourages rape culture.

But despite the online petition receiving signatures from more than 11,500 people, Target has no intention to get rid of the top.

'It is never our intention to offend anyone and we always appreciate receiving feedback from our guests,' Target told USA Today in a statement. 'The shirt you’re describing is part of a collection of engagement and wedding shirts that are available in our women’s and plus size departments.'

'The collection also included shirts that say "Team Bride", "Mrs" and "Bride". These shirts are intended as a fun wink and we have received an overwhelmingly positive response from our guests.'

However, when launching her petition, Amanda explained on the website: 'The word trophy should not refer to any person, man or woman, because we are not THINGS - we are human beings. Labeling any person as a "Trophy" is demeaning their humanity and objectifying them as a tangible object that can be bought, used, and disposed of,' she wrote.

Until Target forces you to buy and wear such a shirt, shut the Hell up!

Congratulations to Target for not caving to a bunch of whiny children. Would that more businesses would do that.

9:28, I realize that the left somehow manages to put up with the cognitive dissonance of their ideas by not actually thinking, but this one takes the cakes. That makes zero sense to me.

But if you try to say anything negative about the attitudes in Cosmo and pornography (but I repeat myself) that treat women as pretty slabs of meat, they attack you as completely backward and repressive; knuckle-dragging idiots intent on destroying their freedom to treat another person as "THINGS" instead of a human being. The intense, high-level hypocrisy they demonstrate is astounding.

As the so-called 'marriage equality' people would say;
'if you don't want a Trophy t-shirt, don't buy one. No-one is making you get gay married. We should celebrate t-shirt slogans in all their forms'.

Actually, the 'marriage equality' folks would be the ones who would say, "Don't let me see anything that bothers me, but require everyone to accept me and celebrate me."

Target, otoh, is the same company who has a law suit against a man who saved a teenage girl who was taken hostage and stabbed inside a Target store.

these activists are directing their rage against target because to attack the people they are REaLLY angry at...women who would happily buy and wear a "trophy" shirt....would be seen as an attack on women, who are victims. It's the soft bigotry of low expectations - they are just women who would wear a "trophy" shirt, they can't be expected to know how demeaning that is...

Target is probably protecting themselves from future lawsuits such that no one can claim that Target encourages or tolerates risky behavior, such as saving the girl. I expect Target to lose the suit graciously, but by filing it they are covering their legal butts going fw. IANAL, but this seems pretty likely. Why else?

This would be the lawsuit where the parents of the girl is suing Target for not having enough security after the two men chased another man into the store and then stabbed the girl.

Target is arguing that they did not create the circumstances that placed the girl in jeopardy - the other guys did. If they hadn't have chased the guy and just called the police or just followed from a distance, nothing would have happened.

As far as I'm concerned, they have the right to place any legal item up for sale in their stores. It is also the public's right not to purchase a product they find offensive.
