Must not associate women with kitchens

BBC golf commentator Peter Alliss has caused a new sexism storm after telling viewers that Open winner Zach Johnson's wife would be spending his winnings on a new kitchen.

The veteran presenter, 84, made the comment as the camera panned towards Johnson's wife Kim, seconds before the golfer landed the putt that won him the prized Claret Jug.

Talking about how Mrs Johnson might spend the prize money he mused: 'She is probably thinking - "if this goes in I get a new kitchen".'

His remarks provoked outrage among viewers, notably from Lesley-Ann Wade, the American manager of former British golfer Nick Faldo.

Taking to Twitter, Ms Wade wrote: 'Can't believe he can say this! Looks at Zach's wife and says "She is thinking if this goes in we get a new kitchen!" #Sexist #Alliss'

Maybe instead of being offended FOR the woman, someone should take 10 seconds to ask the woman if she would be offended by such a remark?

Oh wait, that might remove all need for such false outrage.

You have got that right Stan B.

Still, it is a pretty dumb remark to make as a media personality in this PC-age, and if his wife/spouse/partner just happens to be a keen cook/chef who would indeed appreciate a brand new kitchen, he should have added that fact to prevent what has happened, but maybe he's too self-absorbed in his own interests to care.

Maybe this Wade character should consider the fact that Mrs Johnson would LOVE to spend the money on a new kitchen. I know that both I and my SO would do it in a heartbeat. If I could manage a new tractor that would be a bonus, but a woman saying that would be sexist, of course! :-)

I thought the comment was hilarious!
Isn't that the proper way to respond - just laugh.

At 84 I think he can be excused from the PC bullshit. The world has changed so much over his lifetime. I am male and I wouldn't mind a new kitchen as I do all the cooking. So much for sexism.

Those that are outraged are replacing his wife with themselves and immediately concluding that HE has banished the woman to the kitchen. They are the ones bringing sexism into the discussion. When I got married my wife did do most of the cooking because I didn't know anything about cooking, otherwise we would have starved or been poisoned. Now I actually do most of the cooking and led the charge to buy a new range. I am sick and tired of these perpetually offended morons from inserting politics into normal everyday life. They need to mind their own business, not others.
