Christian Fire Chief Fired For ‘Anti-Gay’ Views ‘Absolutely’ Wants His Job Back

After being fired for writing what’s been described as an “anti-gay” book, former Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran says he “absolutely” wants his job back.

“In the United States of America, Americans should not have to choose between keeping your job and living out your faith,” Cochran told The Daily Signal in an exclusive interview. “And that’s the position the city of Atlanta actually has taken—that I have to have a choice to live out my faith or to keep my job.”

Cochran was fired in January 2015 for publishing a men’s devotional book for a Baptist church group. In the book, “Who Told You That You Were Naked?” Cochran addressed issues of homosexuality, gay marriage and premarital sex from a biblical perspective.

Cochran has been a firefighter since 1981 and was appointed Atlanta’s fire chief in 2008. In 2009, President Obama appointed him as U.S. fire administrator for the United States Fire Administration in Washington, D.C. In 2010, he returned to serve as Atlanta’s fire chief.

In his 34 years of service, Cochran had never been accused of discrimination.

The controversy with his book began in late 2014, when gay activist groups caught wind of the literature and demanded that Cochran be dismissed.

In January, the mayor fired him.

Who would want a fire chief that believes that the best way to put out a fire would be to pray for rain?

Homosexuals are relentless in their pursuit of anyone who would dare to criticize them.

Whitney,

No one would rise to such positions as he did without knowing how to put out fires and even how to direct large groups of men to put out really large an dangerous fires but no, you have to impute something you know cannot be true because you are the one who has decided to be hateful.

I can only say that you'd better learn to be tolerant or you will find that there will be a serious backlash against your lack of tolerance and you will find all the newly gained rights you have achieved evaporating like the dew.

1:03 - you could just as easily say that religious bigots like this fireman are relentless in their demonization of homosexuals; and btw. who was the first to start criticizing whom (religionists or homosexuals)?!
Such "religious faith" is just a code/excuse for selective hating of other people on the grounds of claiming belief in some very ancient middle-eastern superstition.

The primary problem here is not that he wrote a religious book. It is that he distributed it on city property, during work hours, to subordinates in his department. Most organizations have rules against that, precisely to avoid situations like this.

He is in a position of authority with the City, and it would not be unreasonable for employees to assume that the opinions and views he publicly represents are, or could be, relevant to their continued employment.

It would be the equivalent of having a boss who was a member of the Nation of Islam publishing a book about how Whites are evil, sharing it with employees on company time, and then, when White employees make a justifiable complaint, he makes a fuss about getting fired because he was only using his free speech.
