UK: Churchill quotation gets minor-party politician arrested

Today Paul Weston, chairman of the party Liberty GB and candidate in the 22 May European Elections in the South East, has been arrested in Winchester.

At around 2pm Mr Weston was standing on the steps of Winchester Guildhall, addressing the passers-by in the street with a megaphone. He quoted the following excerpt about Islam from the book The River War by Winston Churchill:

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.”

Reportedly a woman came out of the Guildhall and asked Mr Weston if he had the authorisation to make this speech. When he answered that he didn’t, she told him “It’s disgusting!” and then called the police.

Six or seven officers arrived. They talked with the people standing nearby, asking questions about what had happened. The police had a long discussion with Mr Weston, lasting about 40 minutes.

At about 3pm he was arrested. They searched him, put him in a police van and took him away.

Let's not have a discussion about it, let's just lock up anyone who dares to quote history and point out the obvious.

Let the purge begin! When you are not allowed to hold a contrary opinion, there is no hope for change.

"there is no hope for change."

Change is a liberal notion. Stagnation is conservative.

There is no free speech when the major religions or denominations are criticized. It's the consequence of having the terrible earlier wars and persecutions between Christian sects, and then the oppression of Jews, and now the UK is under the threat of more Islamist violence.
If the author of the quote is otherwise above criticism (like Winston Churchill) then there are always catch-all excuses about a speech with quotes causing a public obstruction or a threat to public order, etc.

Your statement is totally almost fallacious, liberals allow no real dissent of their dogma while conservatives are rarely in lockstep. The change liberals endorse is to become more dogmatic.

Ah, little troll, such status anxiety you have, but the liberals these days call themselves conservatives because the conservatives started calling themselves liberals. In N. America, that is. Elsewhere in the world the original meanings persist. That's why Tony Abbott in Australia is a Liberal in a Liberal Coalition and why French socialists regularly decry "savage liberalism."

Did you never wonder why "libertarian" sounds so much like "liberal?" Or why N. American so-called liberals could be so blindingly status quo, pecking order conscious and fascist, in direct proportion to their political commitment?

I guess not.

If he would have said christian he would have bee left alone. you can denigrate christians all day long but you dare not say anything bad bout the "religion of peace" because if you do they will kill you to show you just how peaceful they are!

If you insult a christian and he speaks up he is told to shut up because its a free speech issue, insult muslims and its hate speech! Double standard much?

It's also funny how muslims never refute the facts, they just shoot the messenger!

Anon 1:44 Not true, here is the truth:

"The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement. They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty. They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent. They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office."

Economist Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973)

Explain why most conservatives pine for the "good old days" in the 1950's. You know the time before the Civil Rights movement, women's lib, closeted gays, etc. etc.

Side note: Stinky the troll still has yet to say something even remotely rational.

Anon 6:53 - Most "conservatives" pine for laws that protect your rights, not ones that create new or special ones. We pine for the days when more babies were born in wedlock than out of wedlock. We pine for the days when the government knew how to encourage business growth, and knew its place was on the battlefield and not in the classroom. We pine for the days when social mobility was the norm, not the exception, and any man could make a name for himself based on his own achievements and not on how well he latched on to the media frenzy of the "victim" totem.
