Australia: People must be prevented from discussing homosexual marriage, apparently

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has urged the Federal Government to abandon plans for a public poll on same-sex marriage.

Mr Andrews has written to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull urging him not to hold a plebiscite on legalising marriage for same-sex couples.

In the letter, Mr Andrews argued the plebiscite would legitimise hateful debate about LGBTIQ issues. He said there was no public poll before the Marriage Act was changed to specify that marriage was a union between a man and a woman. "In 2004 the law was changed to be fundamentally unequal, to be discriminatory, to be unfair, without a national plebiscite," Mr Andrews said.

He said the $160 million plebiscite would be wasteful. "But the cost is not best measured in numbers," Mr Andrews said. "The cost is best measured in the pain, the anguish, the sense of inequality, the sense of not being treated fairly.  "This will be a harmful, spiteful debate — it will give legitimacy to hurtful views, views that are essentially bigoted."

The Premier said he did not want to speculate about what would happen if the plebiscite occurred, and returned a vote against legalising same-sex marriage. But he would not say whether Victoria would go its own way in introducing marriage equality laws.

"I haven't ruled that out," Mr Andrews said. "We have a proud history in this state of changing the law and trying to be the progressive capital of our nation and that's not going to change."

Last month, Mr Turnbull said he was confident Australians had the maturity to have a respectful discussion about the issue.

Homosexuals already have the same marriage rights as everybody else. They do not want equality, they want special privileges for their repugnant perverted sexual activities.

What sort of nonsense is Andrews spouting about Victoria going it alone on "marriage equality"? The High Court has already ruled that a similar attempt by the ACT government in 2013 was unconstitutional.

Firstly, Dan Andrews' letter was entirely about Dan Andrews, not about contributing to the issue.
Secondly, Victoria can legislate whatever it wants, but until s. 51(xxi) and s 109 of the Constitution are altered, the Federal Marriage Act will prevail.
Finally, Dan Andrews' letter says what he really thinks about everyone who disagrees with him - their views are hurtful and bigoted and they cannot have a rational debate on the subject so must be silenced. Nothing but contempt for regular people who simply do not accept that marriage should be what the loudest voices demand.
BTW - if the proponents of 'marriage equality' (real double-speak there) really believe their own arguments they will allow the definition of marriage to include a relationship between consenting adults in any configuration.

Dan Andrews should audition for The Biggest Loser, not the weight losing program but the politician who sucks the most in politics in Australia. He has done everything he can to ensure his government will lose the next election and his party will spend at least a decade in the wilderness. He has to be the most inept Premier of an Australian state that I have ever seen. To waste $100M because of a few inner city activists and the CFMEU, a militant union, to piss off the entire state by off siding CFA volunteers in order to the United Firefighters Union in order to fulfil election promises that the voting public weren't aware of are among many issues this incompetent idiot has dumped on the Victorian community that were the opposite of his promises. To now butt into a national issue which he has no control or input into is obscene. This idiot would service his community better by focussing on law and order issues especially when we have an endemic home invasion crisis by African immigrants and first generation criminals.

Anon 6:37 PM - you are absolutely right. The argument we constantly hear from the left in America is "You Disagree With Me? You're a stupid racist bigot, who wants to starve young children and throw grandma over a cliff, and you shouldn't be allowed to speak." It seeps into every discussion. from abortion to education to the Federal Budget. People can't just agree to disagree - we now engage in the politics of personal and public discussion.
