Ohio school takes down Jesus portrait under legal threat‏

A portrait of Jesus that had adorned a southern Ohio public school district building since 1947 has been taken down after officials decided they could not risk losing a lawsuit to the American Civil Liberties Union.

The superintendent of Jackson City Schools told The Associated Press that the decision was made after the district's insurance company declined to cover litigation expenses. Phil Howard said a student club that the school says owns the portrait took it down Wednesday morning at his direction.

"At the end of the day, we just couldn't roll the dice with taxpayer money," Howard said. "When you get into these kinds of legal battles, you're not talking about money you can raise with bake sales and car washes. It's not fair to take those resources from our kids' education."

The "Head of Christ," a popular depiction of Jesus, had been in an entranceway's "Hall of Honor" in a middle school building that was formerly a high school.

Atheists, like other terrorists, are fueled by weakness and the lack of will to fight back. In most instances when they are counterattacked, they lose.

If the school wishes to be a Christian one it should be one and not a "public" one.

I am an atheist and I have no problem if someone wants to put a picture of JC up. Just don't make me pray to it.

That's what vouchers for education are all about.

Does sitting in a revolution theology church for 20+ years make one a communist? Yes. Does having a picture of Obama in a school make it a communist one? Yes. Get your children out of public schools, aka communist indoctrination camps. After all, It's for the children.

Anon 1:20,

If you don't like it here in the USA, get the hell out.

Perhaps I, as an Australian, may point out exactly what the First Amendment actually says:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
Since when is a state school "Congress", its practices a "law", and a religious painting the "establishment" of a religion?

And also as one who's a non-Yank, I should remind US'ers that the First Amendment was introduced to protect so-called Christians from EACH OTHER's very intolerant denominations (re each other) - not from secularists, atheists, muslims, pagans, etc., etc.).
