'No Merry Christmas,' U.S. House Members Told

Control of the USA has definitely fallen into alien hands:
Members of the House of Representatives are being told that no holiday greetings, including “Merry Christmas,” can be sent out in official mail.

According to the Washington Examiner, members who submit official mailings for review by the congressional franking commission that reviews all congressional mail to determine if it can be "franked," or paid for with tax dollars, are being told that no holiday greetings, including "Merry Christmas," can be sent.

"I called the commission to ask for clarification and was told no 'Merry Christmas.' Also told cannot say 'Happy New Year' but can say 'have a happy new year' – referencing the time period of a new year, but not the holiday," a Hill staffer who requested anonymity told the paper.

Another Hill staffer said that "we were given that advice after submitting" a draft mailing.

I have absolutely no problem with this, because Congress should be spending their time working on real issues instead of wasting their time sending out Christmas greetings.

I also have no problem with this, except that "Seasons Greetings" and "Happy Holidays" (and "Happy Ramadan", "Happy Hanukkah", "Merry Solstice" and "Happy Festivus" for that matter) should also be banned.

Franking is horribly abused. It should be used strictly to communicate business with constituents and not to send feel-good ain't-I-nice messages at taxpayer expense.

Yes , the whole issue could be avoided by just letting the congresspeople purchase their own email accounts, andhave the pay be slightly higher.

@3:35, I agree, I hate getting crap from my congressmen.

But still ...

January 20, 2013 - let the purges begin!

Most of these spoiled children end up millionaires after a few terms. They can afford to send out their own holiday greetings without using our own dime to do it.

Why should they use their own money when they have yours to play with? In fact, they should take more of your money. Sheep don't need money.

Sounds like clear content discrimination.
I tend to agree that my taxes shouldn't be used to send out wasteful and meaningless platitudes - but if they are going to be used for that at least let people call it what it is and say what they mean.

If they are so uptight about Christmas, they should change the law so that Christmas is no longer a national Holiday and the public will no longer have to pay federal workers for another holiday. A teacher cannot mention Jesus, a historical figure, but the government can make a religious day a national holiday. As usual, the decisions have nothing to do with logic.

Yep, cultural history is a like your grandmother leaving you her "fortune" plus her pet stuffed parrot on condition you feed it for ever!

I'm more upset that my tax dollars are being used to pay for some commission to tell congressmen that they can't say merry Christmas in email.
