Tennessee Woman Told to Remove American Flag Outside Her Optometry Office

"Dawn Kamin said she would expect opposition to the flying of an American flag in more liberal parts of the country – but not the suburbs of Memphis, Tenn. Kamin said she was ordered to remove an American flag she had posted outside her optometry office.
According to a letter sent to Dr. Kamin, the flag pole and the flag violated the bylaws of the business condominium group. She was told to take down the flag or face the consequences.
However, a spokesman did release an email to Fox News Radio noting that the Corporate Center Condominiums, run by Tesco Properties, prominently flies two American flags. “Placing additional flags in common areas in order to bring greater attention to a particular business is inappropriate,” the spokesman wrote.
Kamin said she was flying the flag to honor the military. “I have family in the military and we have really become aware of our freedoms and what our soldiers do for us,” she said.
Kamin demanded to see the business condominium’s bylaws, but she said so far Tesco Properties has not complied. “They didn’t give me anything in writing,” she said. “All they gave me were threats.”

Perhaps the Dr. should have checked the bylaws before renting/buying there. Having said that, the owners don't seem to have much of a case against her.

Inappropriate? Drawing attention to your business is innappropriate? Isn't that what advertising is all about? Isn't that how business's get attention/customers? It's a pretty stupid excuse on the part of the owners, not to mention a clear violation of the First Amendment, since displaying the flag is a political statement, and therefor protected. The owners may only now be realizing that playing Gestapo agents isn't easy.
BTW, every owner/tenant has the "right" to see/have a copy of the bylaws.

How does the US flag relate to advertising your business? Seems a very long bow to draw. I don't think the courts would side with condominium board.

@Anon 8:13, you make an excellent point. Displaying the American flag is s sign of patriotism to the United States. It has nothing to do with advertising.
I'll bet if she flew a Mexican flag, this would be a non-issue.
Seriously sig, you note that flying the flag is a "sign" but fail to connect it to advertising?
It can be connected in exactly the same way that positioning a religious article like a cross in your advertising declares your commonality with others. Why should declaring your patriotism be any different?
