Must not say Trayvon Martin was at fault

Trayvon

Branca is a Massachusetts lawyer traveling the nation by motorcycle -- a one-man lecture tour on guns and self-defense law.

His strong opinions have been in hot demand since Zimmerman was acquitted of murdering Martin.

"I decided what people really needed to know was the rules up front to avoid getting in trouble in the first place," Branca said.

Branca's appearance at Campbell Law School did not go unnoticed by his critics, who call him inflammatory and say he is viciously attacking Martin and his family.

Critics point to Branca's Twitter feed. He once tweeted, "To handle Trayvon, a KelTec and one 9mm round would be fine."

"Well anyone who violently attacks another person has to be prepared that person might defend themselves," Branca said.

Another tweet read, "Only person responsible for the death of Trayvon, is Trayvon. Oh, and maybe his father."

Mr. Branca is doing a public service in telling people how to avoid touble. Using Trayvon Martin as a case in point is appropriate. That case, more than any other, brought to the forefront a concept stated by Robert Heinlein decades ago. That is, as he stated, "An armed society is a polite society."

If, before attacking Zimmerman Trayvon Martin had stopped to consider the possibility of Zimmerman being armed, he may be alive today.

The fuss and furor about race (which was the main point harped on by our President, Jackson and Sharpton and just about everyone else) was misdirected. The point should have been about walking away.

Like it or not, we live in an armed society. Even those who feel it is appropriate to "beat that white honkey's ass" should put that thought foremost in the decision to attack or leave alone.

"armed society" - I thought the Bible said something to the effect that those who live by the sword/weapon will die by it.
Is that why American society is dying or at least decaying?

Dean said...

The Bible does have that message. Wouldn't it be great if everyone world wide would simultaneously heed that message and get rid of weapons?

That isn't going to happen. so, moral and ethical considerations aside, it is best to act as if people are armed.

Before we start with the moronic conspiracy theories and knee-jerk gun control laws lets all take a step back, take deep breath and examine the issues first. Here are this facts:

Gun related crimes have been going DOWN for the past 20 years.

In 2011 - the latest year I could find detailed statistics - there were 12,664 murders in the US. Of those, 8,583 were caused by firearms.

Meanwhile...

Heart disease: 599,413
Cancer: 567,628
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 137,353
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,842
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 118,021
Alzheimer's disease: 79,003
Diabetes: 68,705
Influenza and Pneumonia: 53,692
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 48,935
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 36,909 (not by a gun)

Source: CDC, National Vital Statistics Report October 2012

The US is #12 on the list of countries with the most gun related deaths in the world. Below Briton and Mexico.

Guns account for the LEAST amount of deaths in the US. Maybe bug bits are lower but no stats on that!

And for those who can't do math, the total gun deaths in America was .003% (three thousands of a percent) of the population!

And lets not forget that after the CC ban was lifted in Chicago the crime rate DROPPED! Proves criminals may be a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them!

Anon: 4:21am It is interesting to know that more people are killed by knives and clubs than rifles.

To ANON 2:01
Spouting Bible references and not their contextual meaning is specious. The “Live by the sword, die by the sword” passage refers not to an armed society but to those that actively utilize their weapons to oppress others or seize what they want rather than for defense. It applies directly to Travon Martin since he was utilizing his weapons to “beat the creepy ass cracker” and he suffered a violent end. Even the “turn the other cheek” reference so often spouted does not mean to let someone beat you to death as is often extrapolated from it. Study the book, do not just cherry pick snippets that seem to point out your view.

1:51 Are you an authority on interpreting the Bible? Everyone seems to think he/she is - hence the numerous sects and denominations. In short, if you feel uncomfortable with something in the Bible, then contrive a "context" or "spin it". If you do like a biblical statement, then say the Bible is very clear on the matter.

I do hope MDH won't be "spouting" fancy terms like 'hermeneutics' or 'exegesis' to make his take on famous bible sayings sound more convincing and amenable to his view.

4:21 - Since gun deaths are lower, I guess that it makes gun deaths fine and dandy, something we shouldn't be concerned about.

Tell ya what MDH, I won't go cherry picking Bible verses as long as you, stinky and Luke don't.

The left is just fine with death by mob beat down, knockout game sucker punch death, home invasion death, but the idea of someone defending their life with a gun gives their tender sensibilities a case of the vapors. Liberalism, truly a mental disorder that prevents all rational thought.

Trayvon Martin the glorified crinimal his parents should be both deported along with any other reletives and they can take his wretched carcass with them back to africa

Nobody ever mentions the crimes prevented by merely displaying a firearm.
I've made 2 potential criminals go elsewhere to ply their "trade" by simply letting them know I have a gun.
And, no, I never reported it to the police.
That would only bring paperwork and investigation...possibly a trial.
Not worth it.

There are two idiots at fault-
Zimmerman should have let the kid be.
Martin should have just gone back & played video games.

Instead one played cop and got jumped, the other played "Mortal Combat" IRL and got shot. Both of them are idiots that were obviously not cut out for the roles they assumed that day, otherwise there would have been no successful jumping by Martin and no successful shooting by Zimmerman. Charging Zimmerman was the height of pointlessness and had the effect everyone expected...at least the people that bothered to read what happened and realized that "Stand Your Ground" laws didn't apply to Zimmerman's defense. (PROTIP- once you are pined to the ground your obligation to retreat has ended)

Since Zimmerman is likely a cold-blooded killer, and Martin wasn't likely a burglar, wouldn't we all be happier if they had both just gone the fuck home and we had never had to hear about them?

It's just an "arms race", the more who have guns, the more will need to have them too - a vicious circle. But it's now too late for the US.

Further discussion of Trayvon Martin's demise in Florida is little more than keyboard masturbation. With 98% specificity you can indentify otherwise unknown people's position on that shooting by knowing whether they have a CCW, or by knowing the number of weapons in their house. You can determine the same thing but with reduced specificity of ~90% just by checking their voter registration card in their wallet to determine what party they self-identify as. Right and wrong will never be agreed upon in cases like this for numerous reasons, and discussion that do not shed light on the actual actions of the players are a waste of good electrons.
