The P-word

Australia:
"The ABC has dumped a segment of its hit television show The Gruen Transfer which joked about the Holocaust, Jews, black people and homosexuals.

The corporation's lawyers stepped in and canned half of the segment in which two ad agencies compete to sell the unsellable, in this case obesity. The part of the segment made by Sydney agency, The Foundry, was found to be racist and discriminatory, and will not go to air on tonight's show.

The Foundry's entry - which was judged to breach ABC editorial standards - sold the idea of "fat pride" by saying that if it was offensive to make jokes about "blacks, poofters, Jews" then why should it be acceptable to make jokes about "fat people"? Host Wil Anderson will direct viewers to a website to view the ad.

The question asked seems entirely reasonable to me so I gather that use of the word "poofter" was behind the ban. In Australia, "poofter" is similar in meaning to the American "faggot" but is mocking rather than hostile.

Hey it's their network. They can choose what to air or not to air, and we have the choice to turn the channel. Turn to what? I don't know.

Apparently, ABC's "editorial standards" are not offended by lying, something they do on a daily basis. This is a perfect example of the Left's "tolerence".

I would rather see them make fun of all minorities equally than one in particular.

That's what I love about Lissa Lampinelli, she attacks all groups.

"Poofter" is the equivalent of the n-word however. It's like me going to England and saying "shagging" which is the equalivalent of the f word.

Of course it's ok to make fun of fat people.

You aren't born that way, are you? The only reason you should weigh a metric ton at birth is 1) if you're an elephant or rhino or 2) if you're a whale.

Seriously, how do these people not look at themselves when they weigh half a ton and go, "wow. that's a lot." But no. Somehow, they keep eating and then appear on talkshows so the host can fake pity for them.

Firstly, you should perhaps know (if you don't already) that in Australia the ABC is the government-owned national broadcaster.
Secondly, I think it a little sad that an ad denouncing abusing the specified minorities is yanked for that very thing.

"It's like me going to England and saying "shagging" which is the equalivalent of the f word. What's the big deal Bobby?

The Irish use both of these words without a bother or second thought.

They also refer to people that they are unhappy with by using the "C" word.

It's part of the Hibernian cultural lexicon. Nothing more. Nothing less.

AND,

You can bet your sweet arse on that!

Hey grainnewale, do you think the Irish use those words on TV? I know there was a billboard with the words Shagadellic or something like that (promoting an Austin Power movie) that was banned in England.

"Of course it's ok to make fun of fat people.
You aren't born that way, are you?"

---Some people are born that way, mother nature is a real motherfucker if you know what I mean. It can give one person an extremely high metabolism while cursing someone else with an extreme low metabolism. Sure, diet and exercise play a part, but it's not like the same solutions work for everyone.

Besides, humor is really boring if you start picking and choosing who's exempt from ridicule. Why should I not be able to make fun of Indians for example? Indians are really ugly for the most part, and I don't care if they are born that way.

Well said Schteveo.

I was taught while growing up "That sticks and stones can break my bones but names can never hurt me". I've added something for my children..."Unless you let them".

I suppose the Monty Python "Bruces" sketch would be out then...

"Rule #1: NO POOFTERS!!!
Rule #2: No one is to maltreat the Abos in any manner... ... while anyone is watching.
Rule #3: NO POOFTERS!!!
Rule #4: This term, I don't want to catch anyone not drinking.
Rule #5: NO POOFTERS!!!
Rule #6: There is NO... rule six.
Rule #7: NO POOFTERS!!!"
