The new morality: You can say what you like but nobody must be upset

Particularly if they can afford to sue:
"Oscar-winning British actress Kate Winslet is suing a UK tabloid newspaper for the "unpleasant and nasty way" in which it reported about her fitness regime. Winslet, 33, claims that the Daily Mail article "injured her personal and professional reputation". She is suing the paper for libel damages of 150,000 pounds ($298,240).

In the feature article, headlined Should Kate Winslet win an Oscar for the world's most irritating actress?, it was claimed that the star had underplayed the amount of exercise she needed to stay in shape. It disputed a quote given to Elle magazine, in which Winslet said: "I don't go to the gym because I don't have time, but I do Pilates workout DVDs for 20 minutes or more every day at home."

According to the court papers, Winslet said she was particularly upset by the "very unpleasant and nasty way" in which the article was written."

Personally, i'm not at all interested in what these "celebrities", (former waitresses and waiters who got lucky) have to say.

On the other hand, i think being one of these so-called "paparazzi" (sp.) should be a capital offense. These cretins routinely break the laws by invading other peoples privacy, lives, and homes. In some cases, actually assaulting the target simply to get some pictures which they then peddle to the highest bidder. Remember princess Di?

Anonymous, celebrities seek the limelight and need the limelight. The moment the paparazzi stop bothering Angelina Joline she will no longer be worth the $20 million per movie.

If you don't want to deal with paparazzi, leave Hollywood and become a play actor.

Great fame is a beautiful thing, these celebrity bastards enjoy lifestyles the rest of us can only dream off. Don't feel sorry for them.

Bobby, they are the last people on earth i would feel sorry for. And yes, most live for the attention no matter what they say. And why can't i get a chance to "bother" Angelina a few times?

If you don't want to deal with paparazzi, leave Hollywood and become a play actor.Okay, so you are either saying that the paparazzi is noble and wonderful in all they do and should therefore be "tolerated," or you believe that just because someone is successful in their professional, that gives the right to someone to constantly invade their privacy in all situations.

Great fame is a beautiful thing, these celebrity bastards enjoy lifestyles the rest of us can only dream off. Don't feel sorry for them.Oooooo... the green-headed monster of jealousy rears its head.

The whole point is ... Winslet REALLY IS a whiny biyatch. There was no paps involved in this story, just a reporter who did an actual interview.

"Okay, so you are either saying that the paparazzi is noble and wonderful in all they do and should therefore be "tolerated," or you believe that just because someone is successful in their professional, that gives the right to someone to constantly invade their privacy in all situations."

---First of all, WE THE PUBLIC create the paparazzi, if a picture of The Jonas Brothers diddling some bimbo didn't fetch $10,000, $20,000 or even $50,000 most paparazzi would simply quit. And let's face it, without those pictures magazines like People, US, and OK would be bankrupt.

The privacy issue is complicated, if I'm at a bar and I get wasted and start a fight, people can and will take pictures with their cellphones. If I'm in a yacht and decide to sunbathe nude, paparazzis with long lenses can capture that.

In a way, the paparazzi do the public good. When they caught Mel Gibson with his drunken tirade, when they catch celebrities that claim to be virgins acting lasciviously, when they expose hypocrisy, they do society good because they put those "idols" down in the ground where they belong.

With Mel Gibson, the paparazzi did him a favor by forcing him to examine his problems with alcohol.

In Miami, a paparazzi caught Father Alberto, a popular Priest with a TV and newspaper column french kissing and grabbing the ass of his secret girlfriend at the beach. Imagine the outrage, that hypocritical priest was a big preacher of virginity, chastity, following church's law.

In a way, the paparazzi are like the eyes of God, if there's sin, they will find it and expose it.

"Oooooo... the green-headed monster of jealousy rears its head."

--- I admit I'm jealous, but when the paparazzi show me the truth, I'm not so jealous.

This is a game the masses play with most leaders and famous people. We create them and destroy them, we love and hate them. Only the truly virtuous or at least authentic can survive the ravages of fame.

Angelina Jolie may want privacy, but would she really want privacy if it meant no money, no fame, and a dead-end job at McDonalds? I doubt it.

In a way, the paparazzi do the public good.Right. They helped kill Princess Diana. That was good, right?

When they caught Mel Gibson with his drunken tirade, when they catch celebrities that claim to be virgins acting lasciviously, when they expose hypocrisy, they do society good because they put those "idols" down in the ground where they belong. First, Gibson wasn't caught in a drunken tirade by the papparazi. His tirade was caught on tape by the police. It was made a story by the main stream media.

Secondly, do you really take such pleasures in the failures of others? No compassion? No heart?

In a way, the paparazzi are like the eyes of God, if there's sin, they will find it and expose it. "Sin" according to who? Them? You? Could your life withstand the pressure of being filmed and stalked at every turn? Or is it just a case of "these people make more money than I do so they deserve to be treated badly?"

Angelina Jolie may want privacy, but would she really want privacy if it meant no money, no fame, and a dead-end job at McDonalds? I doubt it.There is a time and a place for everything. There is a time for people to take pictures and all that. That time is not 27 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

The papparazi is not interested in "the truth." They are interested in only making money. There is nothing virtious or good about them.

"They helped kill Princess Diana. That was good, right?"

---That's not true, Diana's driver was drinking and taking amphetamines, he was also speeding and driving recklessly. That's what killed Diana.

"First, Gibson wasn't caught in a drunken tirade by the papparazi. His tirade was caught on tape by the police. It was made a story by the main stream media."

---Point taken on Gibson.

"Secondly, do you really take such pleasures in the failures of others? No compassion? No heart?"

---I have compassion for victims, not hypocrites, not holier than thou people, not liars, not cheaters. Adultery, drunkenness, drug use, and other sins are rampant in Hollywood. I'm glad the paparazzi expose them, maybe some people will learn from it and get their shit together.

""Sin" according to who? Them? You?"

---According to God I would think, and according to society. Sure, biblical interpretation is a divisive issue, but even liberal religions accept adultery as a sin.

"Could your life withstand the pressure of being filmed and stalked at every turn?"

---If I'm making lots of money, yes. True, Monica Lewinsky wasn't making lots of money when the paparazzi chased her, but, thanks to her fame she was able to cash-in with a black and white documentary, a book, and a line of clothes.

"Or is it just a case of "these people make more money than I do so they deserve to be treated badly?""

---That's not the case, these people do a different job than I do. How do you feel about soldiers that have gone AWOL because they didn't agree with the Iraq/Afghanistan war? How would you feel about a cop that's afraid of killing people? When you're a celebrity dealing with the paparazzi is part of the job.

"There is a time and a place for everything. There is a time for people to take pictures and all that."

---Yes, and the powerful would love to decide that for us. Just like some people want to decide what is free speech and what is hate speech. I'd rather have a free press.

"The paparazzi is not interested in "the truth." They are interested in only making money. There is nothing virtuous or good about them."

---There's nothing wrong with making money and delivering the truth. Fox News does a great job doing both. The paparazzi enjoy capturing truthful moments, be that a kiss, sex, or simply shopping in a supermarket.

Rather than hating the paparazzi, we should look at society. Why do we worship celebrities? Why are we obsessed with beauty? Why are we interested in knowing what people do behind closed doors?

Why blame the butcher when you're the one ordering the meat?
