Actress leads campaign to change the name of her high school which honors a slave-owning Confederate general

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore is campaigning that her high school change its name away from a Confederate general.

JEB Stuart High School in Fairfax, Virginia, was founded in 1959 and allegedly named in honor of the Civil War commander in apparent protest at the Supreme Court's decision to integrate schools.

Moore and her high school friend-turned-producer Bruce Cohen are demanding that the school rename itself, and started a Change.org petition that had already amassed more than 28,000 signatures as of Monday night.

The school formerly included the Confederate flag on its basketball court and in its school symbol. Moore said that students should not have to be embarrassed about a name with ties to slavery

Stuart was a slave owner who quickly left the US Army and joined the Confederacy shortly after Virginia seceded, according to the History Channel.

Jeb Stuart was a much better ethical role model than William Jefferson Clinton who also has schools etc. named after him.

Should we take Grant off the $20 bill. He owned a slave prior to the war.

George Washington University, Washington College, Washington and Jefferson University, Washington and Lee University, George Washington High School, Jefferson College, Jefferson Community College, Thomas Jefferson High School, Thomas Jefferson University, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Andrew Jackson High School, John Adams Elementary, James Madison University, James Madison College, James Madison Middle School, James Madison High School, James Monroe High School, Monroe College. Quite a few places are named for people who owned slaves or otherwise supported the institution of slavery while it was legal in the United States. I suppose we should change the names of all these places -- including the names of several cities, counties and states. Then we can begin the task of re-writing our history books to completely whitewash (wrong word?) our history. But then, no one would know why some people feel so entitled these days.
