The thought police telling kids heterosexuality’s not the norm

Miranda Devine comments from Australia

SO now it’s a thought crime to regard heterosexuality as the norm in human relationships. This is called “heterosexism”, joining racism and sexism as the new no-go zone, and the Proud Schools pilot program rolled out to 12 Sydney and Hunter high schools over the past two terms is aimed at stamping it out.

The program defines “heterosexism” as the practice of “positioning heterosexuality as the norm for human relationship”, according to the Proud Schools Consultation Report. “It involves ignoring, making invisible or discriminating against non-heterosexual people, their relationships and their interests. Heterosexism feeds homophobia.”

So there it is. If you think the vast majority of people are attracted to the opposite sex and that heterosexual human relationships are the norm, you are feeding homophobia.

A world going wacko where do we find normal folk?

Well, I for one agree. There is just too much discrimination that hurts and inconveniences people.

For example, as a left handed person I must use a writing system that is made specifically for right handers! Imagine the psychic trauma we left handers suffer having to push a pen or pencil rather than pull it as all the right handers do.

And then there is the preferential seating thing. Christ sits at the right hand of God. And look at the U.S. flag code: "When flown in a row with other flags the flag of the United States is always placed in the position of honor - to its own right." Why not the left? What's wrong with that, huh? What's so honorable about the right? In fact, look at the words 'right' and 'wrong'. What discriminatory language that is. How do you think that makes us left handers feel? Huh? Well, just think about it.

And just try finding a left handed bowling ball or set of golf clubs. Oh sure, they're out there, but not many. I demand a 50/50 ratio of left handed bowling balls, golf clubs, baseball mitts and whatever.

And stop intimating that most people are right handed. That's discrimination in it's worst form.

School need to start programs to stress the equality of left handers and inculcate the idea that left handedness is the norm.

No matter that the huge percentage of people are right handed.

In this world truth is just an inconvenient fact.

Sarcastic rant over.

If the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, and the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, the left-handed people are the only ones in their right minds.

Or

Everyone is born right-handed, but only the great overcome the handicap.

The usual deliberate misleading misuse of the term "normal" - also in the title here by JJ (whose titles are of course often angled to press certain buttons in the readers!).

Norm (social), expected patterns of behaviour and belief, often studied in sociology, social psychology, and a myriad of other academic fields.

Given that definition, the school's effort to create the term 'heterosexist', and tie it to homophobia how is Jon's headline misleading?

Now, let me restate my post, as you obviously didn't catch the point:

The norm for humans, actually for all sexually reproducing organisms, is heterosexuality. That is a fact, or truth.

Nothing in that statement means it is okay to denigrate, persecute or disrespect those outside the norm.

There is no argument with efforts to promote respectful treatment of those outside the norm. However, I will continue to poke fun at those who try to hide truth with politically correct speech.

I hope this clarifies my somewhat intellectually demanding previous post.

3:06 AM you conveniently forget the use of "norm" or "normal" as just the middle part of the bell-curve in any population or grouping, where there has to be some at either end of the majority or else the bell-curve would just fall somewhere else.
PS. You are the opposite of "intellectually demanding" but a typical example of an arrogant, smug b*****d!

I can guess approximately where 3:06 would appear in a bell graph of the world's biggest tools?

I agree with Dean at 1:29 a.m. - handism is abhorrent and should be avoided by all right thinking - ah, um, excuse me there - correct thinking people. And the way to do this is to start young, in the first grade. Classes should be divided down the middle (using a front-back division, not a left-right division. And so there is no inference taken as to the "preferred" handedness, as determined by coin toss, those in one section should be forced to write - oh damn, excuse me again - deploy their pencils with their left hand and in the other section to deploy their pencils with their other hand. See - it can all be fixed just so long as there is absolutely no limit to how far we are willing to go in search of perfect political correctness.

I can't even begin to describe my response to handling discussions about the "normality" of homosexuality on a family-rated blog.

I don't like smoking, I find it a disgusting habit. I don't hate smokers nor am I afraid of them ("tobaccophobic"?). I don't like the idea of someone sticking his wang up another man's butthole, I find it a disgusting habit. I don't hate homosexuals nor am I afraid of them ("homophobic"). In either case, I do not approve of the behavior (as if anyone cared about my opinion) but that does not make me afraid of them.

3:28 - typical liberal argument. Labels, vitriol, spittle flying, but no coherent thought.

As used in the article and my post 'norm' means just what the definition posted says.

If you believe in GOD, and accept his laws, then homosexuality is condemned and is outside the norm. Heterosexuality is the norm. As in GOD's instruction to be fruitful and multiply.

If you are an atheist, agnostic, or whatever and believe in evolution, homosexuality is outside the norm and is condemned by the evolutionary process itself. The first and foremost rule of evolution is propagation of the species, therefore homosexuality is an evolutionary dead-end, and heterosexuality is the normal spectrum for said propagation.

So no matter whether you believe in GOD, or in evolution, homosexuality is condemned by both. No if's, and's, or but's about it.

In nature, procreation normal avenue is to have two opposite sex interchange genetic materials through sexual intercourse. This has been proven scientifically to be nature's caculous to creating the most diverse and robust path for all species. Natural selection dictates those not preferencing to such genetic exchange, not produce offsprings and conclude there there genetics lineage. It would be logically and naturally derivde such natural selection would be an evolutional dead end. Thus, the inability to naturally procreate would mean natural selection has deemed that genetic variation as less than desireable.

What a lot of ignorant opinions expressed on this thread!!! Some like the last (12:26) thinks humans are no more than sex-cells. So how does homosexuality manage to express itself in every generation in every part of the world since at least the beginning of recorded history, and despite persecution by types very similar to those who write on this thread??!!
(A pity such bigoted views don't die out by the process of natural selection against stupidity.)

3:08 clearly did not understand 12:26's comment. Maybe this will help explain things a bit.

Clearly 11:18 (Luke) did not understand 3:08's comment (but unlike Luke, this comment does not pretend to "borrow" some supposed argument by merely referencing some vague link that may or may not contain relevant information).
