Teacher Compares Student’s Romney Shirt to KKK Robe‏

A Philadelphia high school teacher is under investigation after she reportedly ordered a student to take off a t-shirt supporting Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign and compared the shirt to a Ku Klux Klan sheet.

The incident occurred at Charles Carroll High School in Port Richmond. When the student refused the order, she tried to throw the girl out of class.

The teacher reportedly told the 16-year-old student that the high school was a “Democratic school” and then threatened to use a marker to cross out Romney’s name.

Philadelphia School District spokesman Fernando Gallard confirmed to Philly.com that, “a teacher made some comments to a student wearing a Romney t-shirt in their classroom.”  “The comments were of a political nature, and also of a personal nature,” he told the newspaper. “We are looking into the comments, and the conduct of the teacher.”

Gallard said the student was well within her rights to wear the t-shirt and was not in violation of any school dress codes.

In the meantime, the teacher was switched out of the class “to allow the student to feel comfortable to come to the class.”
Gallard said the student was within her rights.

The incident became public when the child’s father called radio station IQ 106.9 FM.  “My daughter refused to leave the classroom or acknowledge this bullying,” he said.

Is there something about becoming a teacher that causes liberal attitudes to form? Or is it just that liberals are more likely to be come teachers?

Even in Montana, a heavily conservative state, in three plus decades of teaching I frequently found myself in a small conservative minority among my peers.

It's a puzzle.

Are schools in the US a place for students to promote political or religious views via clothing? It would be okay re older students in a college or university, but not for younger children who should be receiving information not running campaigns! Another reason for school uniforms.

Mmmmmm, well there is the matter of free speech to be considered. IIRC various court cases have determined students do not shed their First Amendment rights at the school door.

But you are correct. School uniforms would solve a good many problems.

A contentious topic, though.

Anon 2:19 - so long as the girl's shirt was not disruptive then she was entirely within her rights to wear whatever slogan she likes - that is the whole point of this site and the Amendment it is based on.
As for the teacher, 'this is a democratic school'??? Yeah, the sort of democracy where you are not allowed to express an opposing viewpoint. If she meant it was a Democrat school - same thing applies.

Now do you understand why todays schools are refered to as, "indoctrination camps"?

For the most part, most schools curriculums, especially those so-called "centers of higher leartning", are controlled by the teachers, who, in turn, are controlled by their unions. And the labor movement is controlled by the Communist Party of America, which started the organized labor movement in this country.

The shirt is "offensive" to this idiot teacher, but I am sure this she would see no problem with forcing her entire class sing songs in praise of our emperor Obama!

Home schooling is what can save America's future generations. Left to the present system, those generations, and thereby the country, will be lost.

A few years ago some youth was told he had to turn his NRA T-Shirt inside out or return home and change his shirt the parents went to court over this and the school retracted their liberal dress code

Problem solved by school uniforms or dress-codes. Highschool students are not adults or voters, and their rights are not the same as adults, but under the supervision of their parents or adult authorities. At least that should be the case.

16 y/o girls are normally too body-shy to have done the following in protest, but would have been a marvelous situation to watch the teacher handle if she had.

Teacher: "You must remove that tee shirt!"
Student: "OK"
Teacher: "But you don't even have a bra on!"
Student: "YOU were the one who ORDERED me to take it off."

Older people are more likely to follow inane orders to the letter to demonstrate the folly of the order.
