SC: Mom locked up for cheering at child’s graduation

Police goons at work.  Black spontaneity can be noisy but there was no need to lock her up for it.  Just escorting her outside would have been the maximum needed.  Given the poor relations between blacks and the cops, you would have thought that the goons would have gone easy.  No such luck.  Being big he-men is their jerk-off.  Power corrupts, as Acton said.
"Shannon Cooper cheered as her daughter walked across the stage to get her diploma from South Florence High School Saturday night, but just minutes later, Shannon was handcuffed and arrested.

She said officers walked her across the Florence Civic Center, where the graduation ceremony was being held, in full view of everyone, including her daughter, Iesha Cooper, 18.

Police said it was announced before the ceremony that anyone who cheered or screamed would be escorted out of the building.

Shannon was booked at the detention center and stayed there for several hours until posting a $225 bond.

I've been to a couple of High School graduations in South Carolina where the no cheering rule was in effect. While I can sympathize with this woman, I can understand why it was used. These were big graduations, 500+ kids. In the past, some of the cheers when on for a minute or more. It stopped the graduation and extended it for at least an hour. In some cases, the cheering drowned out the announcement of the next graduate's name thus depriving that kid of their momment. It one thing for a spontaneous 2 second cheer but where do you draw the line? In today's lawsuit happy society the only realistic solution is to ban everything.

The woman cheered and was escorted from the building like anyone else who cheered. (That's a stupid policy, but that is another post.) She then became disruptive and was arrested.

She was not arrested for cheering during the graduation.

'No cheering' rules are understandable, and needed.
My wife and I just attended our granddaughter's graduation. Unfortunately the request to hold applause and cheers until the last graduate had walked was ignored.
The woman behind us had bellows for lungs and her yelling was loud enough to hurt our ears. Requests to hold it down were met with "It's my daughter and I'll cheer if I want to." Apparently she had a lot of children graduating as she spent nearly the entire time yelling as students walked across the stage.
Graduation ceremonies are unpleasant enough without the screams and shouts of the inconsiderate.
As for the woman sent to jail - it sounds like she did a little more than just cheer her child. There's usually more to the story than an sensational headline.

Keep in mind that when police have contact with a party they run the party's name and criminal history. She may very well have had a history of disorderly conduct or other criminal shenanigans. That would easily have justified putting her in jail to post bail.

Bird of P - if you are a US citizen you should know that the Constitutional right to freedom of speech is about political or religious matters not about mere cheering etc. and preventing others' right to be heard.

There is another side to this that isn't being discussed. I am saddened by the NEED for these rules. People have become so inconsiderate today that they can't just give a quick cheer for their graduate, and then let the next kid in line have their moment. The next kid in line doesn't matter. It is all about ME and MY KID. It's not my problem if the next kid's parents don't get to cheer for them. We have taken all sense of personal responsibility and responsibility to those around us out of our society. Once that is gone, you have to replace them with rules. So there you go. Entitlements take away personal responsibility, which leads to more rules, which leads to oppression.

Liz: Excellent comment. Thumbsup.

Really, w/out a video, how can the rest of us know if she just gave a perfectly reasonable "hooray!" or was being an inconsiderate boor?

Fortunately, this was a graduation ceremony, so presumably there will be at least one clear video available from amongst the many recorders that were undoubtedly humming. Investigative journalists, activate!

12:37 anonymouse you have it backwards. Blacks hate cops. Blacks hate conservatives. I as a conservative do not hate blacks, but I don't like their hate towards myself.
