Black NY principal bans patriotic song  -- supported by Department of Education

She is trying to impose her own bigoted views on others -- despite their objections.  She should be fired

A controversial Coney Island principal has pulled the plug on patriotism.  Her refusal to let students sing “God Bless the USA” at their graduation has sparked fireworks at a school filled with proud immigrants.

Greta Hawkins, principal of PS 90, the Edna Cohen School, won’t allow kindergartners to belt out the beloved Lee Greenwood ballad, also known as “Proud to be an American,” at their moving-up ceremony.

Five classes spent months learning the patriotic song, which skyrocketed in popularity after the 9/11 attacks and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

It was to be the rousing finale of their musical show at the June 20 commencement. The kids, dressed up for their big day, would wave tiny American flags — which, as the lyrics proclaim, “still stand for freedom.”

But Hawkins marched in on a recent rehearsal and ordered a CD playing the anthem to be shut off, staffers said.  She told the teachers to drop the song from the program.  “We don’t want to offend other cultures,” they quoted her as explaining.

The curt edict stunned both staff and parents.  “A lot of people fought to move to America to live freely, so that song should be sung with a whole lot of pride,” said mom Luz Lozada, whose son, Daniel, is in kindergarten.

The song has been sung at previous school events. Last year’s fifth-graders, including another Lozada child, performed it at graduation.  “Everybody applauded and whistled,” the mom said. “They gave it a standing ovation.”  Parents — many immigrants from Pakistan, Mexico and Ecuador — “love it,” Lozada said.

A teacher agreed: “It makes them a little goosebumpy and teary-eyed. I’ve never come across anyone who felt it insulted their culture.”

Department of Education spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti gave The Post an explanation staffers said they never heard — that Hawkins found the lyrics “too grown up” for 5-year-olds.   The song starts: “If tomorrow all the things were gone, I’d worked for all my life. And I had to start again, with just my children and my wife, I’d thank my lucky stars, to be livin’ here today.”

Scaperotti said the department supports the principal’s decision. “The lyrics are not age-appropriate,” she said.

But Justin Bieber’s flirty song about teen romance, “Baby,” was deemed a fine selection for the show. Hawkins had no problem with 5-year-olds singing lines such as, “Are we an item? Girl, quit playing.”

As is obvious, the NYC Dept. of Education, which is basically a subsidiary of the teachers union, agrees with her, and the union will protect her. While this principle has deemed patriotism as "offensive", apparently, forcing her personal religious beliefs on the children is ok.

I wonder what immigrants must think when they come to America seeking freedom, and they see how it is abused, and how that abuse is tolerated.

Patriotic songs are fine period. If you don't like them, plug your ears or leave.

Public education is a cesspool of indoctrination. This crap shouldn't surprise anyone. Liberals want your children stupid, and kept as far away from traditional love of country and freedom as possible. A disheartened, beaten, ignorant populace is easier to rule.

"Public education is a cesspool of indoctrination. "

BULLSHIT! What we have here is an ignorant right wing dupe with absolutely no grasp of reality.

Multiculturalist BS is totally devoid of any benefit to society. In fact it is very divisive. Patriotic songs on the other hand can bring people of diverse backgrounds together by emphasizing he things we have in.common. A good leader can everone on the same page, but our current "leaders" use class envy and charges of racism to divide. It might offer a short term political benefit, but it is harmful to society.

" it is harmful to society."

It is harmful to right wing society. We will bury you.

What I wonder is why she cut them off after they had been practicing the song for months? If she was going to stop the song from being sung it should have been done at the very start instead of close to the end.

WTF! (Watch this fool) somebody pleeaassse. And we wonder why our kids are failing in school.
Well…how do you like that!!! Someone exercising [their] given power and privileges of ‘freedom & liberty’ only to deny children the equivocal opportunity to express patriotic appreciation. If Society’s reach for such political correctness has impaired (to such fragility) our statute beliefs as a nation so much that other cultures are or becomes so offended by US patriotism being displayed---then these ‘other offended cultures’ need to [a] remember why they chose to come here; or [b] get the hell out.

The Declaration of Independence specifically mentions God, but the Liberals don't want you to know that.

The Constitution of the United States specifically names Jesus Christ (look it up: it was signed "...in the year of our Lord..." And just who do you think that "Lord" refers to.

The United States was founded on Christian values, and was founded as a Christian nation, and it is the Liberals who have twisted and churned this country into the Obamanation that it has become.

Well - maybe "Lord" refers to "Lord of the Rings"!

To continue a Star Wars theme from another post, I prefer Lord Vadar.

And that's the problem with this country. You probably actually believe that Lord doesn't refer to Jesus Christ. And yes, I know you are probably joking, but the general lack of seriousness when it comes to patriotism is pathetic.

The American Revolution was supposed to get rid of "Lords" and introduce a government by the People. So why go looking for supernatural "Lords" to run your life?

Anon 4:39 AM, then please explain why the New England Primer, the de-facto learning too for early America was so deeply rooted in Christian teaching.

Please explain why the Declaration of Independence clearly spells out our rights as given by God.

Please explain why the Federalist papers contained references to the Christianity.

Please explain why the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the united States is a Christian nation.

Please explain why prayer in schools was always considered the norm.

Please explain why since the 1960's Liberals have torn apart the very fabric that the United States was funded on.

Sadly, President Obama (peace be upon him) declared that the united States is no longer a Christian nation. And you know what, he is correct. But it was, and it can be again, IF Christians are willing to take a stand.

Cuz the British Lords dictated whereas those who look to The Lord do so voluntarily.

/you really couldn't figure this out on your own?

Short answer :- the US Constitution did not introduce a theocracy. It gave freedom of religion to prevent any one christian denomination or sect becoming the dominant or state religion. (Other religions weren't present in any significant numbers at the time in those British colonies in question.)

3:17 you said "voluntarily" - that is the offer you can't refuse unless you want to be condemned to Hell.
