Headlight flashers pulled up in Britain too

For years, drivers who pass a police speed trap have flashed their headlights at oncoming cars to warn them to slow down.  But this spirit of friendly co-operation could become a thing of the past after one police force caught almost as many drivers who flashed their lights as actual speeders.

In an anti-speeding campaign, Lancashire Police handed out 23 tickets for breaking the limit - and  20 for 'misuse of headlights'.

Critics said it was a money-making exercise that would erode public support for the police, while the AA said imposing the £30 fines created a ‘legal and moral minefield’.

But the police insisted that warning other drivers of a speed trap was ‘a dangerous practice’.  Lancashire traffic officer PC Antony Gray said: ‘Potentially they are putting lives at risk.  'Flashing your lights at someone may make them slow down for a second, but it will not make them change their habits.

‘Speeding motorists need to be spoken to so they will seriously consider their irresponsible driving.’

However, Sean Corker, of the Drivers’ Alliance, said motorists had to be told they were in a speed-check area, adding: ‘I don’t think there’s a difference between a road sign and a person giving a warning.’

The purge on drivers who flashed their headlights was condemned as a 'legal and moral minefield' by the AA.  The motoring organisation said the move is wide open to legal challenge and fears innocent motorists could be targeted for warning other drivers to slow down.

A court challenge is needed.  Cops will get away with anything if you let them.

Flashing your lights at someone may make them slow down for a second, but it will not make them change their habits. Kind of like speed cameras.

FTFY.

"Motorists need to be spoken to"?

Sounds like a tactic (see: threat) used by the Gestapo. Then again, the people behind this nonsense are in fact, EnviroNazi's, so i guess it's quite appropriate.

Unless i'm mistaken, there was a very recent court case here in the US on this very subject. The court found that flashing the headlights was considered, "free speech", and therefor protected by the First Amendment.

But, we're talking about Britain, a nation that is totally addicted to, and consumed by, extreme political correctness. Perhaps, when Sharia Law is fully implimented, and that should be any time now, things will change.

When he says "Flashing your lights at someone may make them slow down for a second, but it will not make them change their habits." he's basically admitting speeding tickets only help support the police department, and don't slow folks down.

"any time now" - more likely A.Levy will be shot dead in a US street or mall than Sharia Law will see anyone beheaded in a Britain!!

As w/the previous stories on this topic, the sol'n is simple: the police should hire a few cars to drive around and flash their lights where appropriate, slow down the traffic, and ostensibly make the streets safer.

Such an approach would free up trained police officers to do the dirty and dangerous work of real policing instead.

Well, that's what would happen if this were truly about safety. Hasn't happened yet, though.

They're after revenue, not safety. They want order, control, power, and your money.

That'll be the day. You see, unlike the pansy's in Britain, A. Levy is licensed to carry a concealed handgun, and is "very well versed" in it's use.

Also, A. Levy lives in the US, meaning, neither my govt. nor any of our religious institutions have "officially recognized" Sharia Law, as has the British govt. and the church of England..

Traffic tickets are meant to do one thing and one thing only. GENERATE REVENUE!

"A. Levy is licensed to carry a concealed handgun,"

Big gun, small dick. Isn't that the saying?

I expect to read about Levy dying in a shootout with the police of the 'Good ole USA' like so many nutters before him.
