Imus again

We read:
"U.S. radio personality Don Imus on Tuesday defended linking a football player's race to brushes with the police as Imus tried to dampen a brewing race controversy over remarks he made one day earlier.

During his breakfast show on Monday on Citadel Broadcasting Corp's ABC Radio Networks, Imus discussed Adam "Pacman" Jones, who was suspended by the National Football League in April 2007 because of his link to a Las Vegas triple shooting.

A colleague of Imus commented on how many times Jones had been arrested since he had been drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2005, and Imus asked what color he was. Told that Jones is black, Imus responded: "Well, there you go. Now we know."

Imus is trying to wriggle out of it but why should he? Blacks DO have a huge crime-rate.

Imus is an ass. Always has been, and always will be. His current "spin" is that he was pointing out Pacman's race to bring light to the problem of police harassment of members of the African American Community. Anyone who listens to Brothers Al and Jesse for 5 minutes knows that the police have nothing better to do than randomly arrest brothas (the more famous the better) in an attempt to keep the brothas down.

It's time this ultra-liberal, mumbling old fool was sent packing. His 15 minutes have long ago expired.

This is one of those "can't win" situations.

Assume for a moment that Imus was making a racial comment. The problem is not that he said something about "Pacman" Jones, but that comment lumps all blacks together.

That is neither right nor fair. It is the epitome of a racial slur. It is fine to criticize the actions of one person, or even people acting as a group, but to paint all people with a broad brush is not right, and indefensible.

On the other hand, if we buy into Imus' explanation that blacks get arrested more and that is what he was trying to emphasize, the problem with that is he has now painted the hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officers as being bigoted or racially motivated.

While every profession has its bad apples, painting all law enforcement officers with such a racially charged brush is wrong when people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton do it, and it is wrong when Imus does it.

Imus is free to say whatever he wants. That is what "freedom of speech" is about. However, actions - including speech - have consequences and Imus should feel the wrath for this latest irresponsible comments.

You're right gitarcarver, in spite of the fact that what he said (and meant) is statistically true.

Figures lie and liars figure.

I understand what you are saying "statistically," but Imus' explanation is lacking in any type of logic or thought.

The discussion and news item upon which Imus was commenting was concerning "Pacman" Jones, a relatively high profile black suspended NFL player.

Imus' comment was not on Jones' guilt or innocence, but rather that the only reason he has been arrested and charged 6 times is that he is black.

That is not a statistical analysis at all. That is just a statement thrown out there to incite as it has no basis in reality.

Sorry, but I am going to disagree with Imus that Jones was only arrested and charged on the basis of the color of his skin.

The problem is that you really cannot apply a statistical analysis to a sample of one.

The comment is either racially motivated and therefor insulting to blacks, or insulting to law enforcement officers of all races.

Either way, Imus' comment was foolish, to say the least.
