MI: Quran-burning pastor defies hostile mob

We read:
"A controversial Florida pastor banned last week from protesting at a Detroit-area mosque on Friday cut short a demonstration at a city hall largely drowned out by counter-protesters.

Terry Jones, 59, had vowed to return this week, saying that his ban on demonstrating in front of the landmark Islamic Center of America in heavily muslim Dearborn had violated free speech protections of the Constitution. 'We are here today to speak out on issues that pertain to all American citizens,' Jones said, using a wireless microphone at a podium set up at the top of the city hall steps."

Separate barricaded zones were created for Jones' protest on the steps of city hall and for counter-protesters across Michigan Avenue, a busy four-lane street. Jones' 75 supporters were outnumbered by about five-to-one.

Police were a visible presence on both sides of the street and on two rooftops across the street from city hall.

Good to hear that the police took big precautions to protect him this time. Quite a change from last time.

Who pays for this police protection? The taxpayers! So much for tea party mantra of smaller government and lower taxes.

Terry Jones is a member of the Tea Party?

The media always likes to make observations about the numbers of supporters. They are implying, or you are meant to infer, that public opinion on the matter is 5 to 1 against. Of course, the number of people that actually showed up for either side has nothing to do with actual public opinion. I know that I'm working and not going to take the day off to protest.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

(..... unless it costs too much money)

Of course - monetary cost is always the deciding factor in any consideration - unless one has given up on love or the world!

sorry, the last should have read - "at least if one has also given up on Love and Life".

Well, if everyone else can get police protection, why not Terry Jones?

Atheism = cleansing = more deaths than all causes totalled

why is the religion of peace so unpeaceful at his meetings lol

Most of these brutal dictators were semi-religious. Hitler was when it suited him. Mussolini claimed to be. Franco claimed to be. Even Mugabe claims to be Catholic, and Saddam H. claimed to be religious. Stalin trained as a priest and learned how the Church could control and manipulate the masses.

I don't get police protection. There is no cop standing beside me. If a crime is committed against me, then the cops will come. The cops are not security guards or bodyguards. They generally respond to crimes.

Greg, how many cops are assigned to your protection detail?

If Mr. Jones wants protection, he should hire the appropriate people.

Absolutely. Because we all know the dissemination of ideas - popular or unpopular - should be based on the ability to protect oneself.

Therefore, we ensure that mob rules because ideas that are unpopular can be crushed for that lack of an individual's funds to hire goons to protect themselves from goons that wish to silence them.

Just like you do not want your federal tax dollars to pay for abortions / Planned Parenthood, I do not want my taxes dollars supporting scumbags like Mr. Jones.

Even hostile mobs have first amendment rights.

---Well said! We shouldn't deny patriots like Terry Jones the opportunity to express themselves because of Muslim mobs.

"Even hostile mobs have first amendment rights."

---There's no right to be hostile, violent, or break down a security barrier. It's freedom of speech, not freedom to beat the crap out of people. Have you seen hooliganism in Europe? That's what happens when you care more about the rights of a mob than the right of peaceful individuals.

"Just like you do not want your federal tax dollars to pay for abortions / Planned Parenthood, I do not want my taxes dollars supporting scumbags like Mr. Jones."

---There's no constitutional right to abortion or birth control, the bill of rights mentions neither. However, there is a constitutional right to free speech.

I am simply talking about my taxes and how I would like them to be spent. One example was protected speech and the other was reproductive rights. Plain and simple. If you want to make more of it, then that's your problem. Jerkoff.

This would be the "once my position has been exposed, I can only resort to namecalling" moment.

Just stating facts...

"Then you admit that your analogy of comparing abortion and birth control to a Constitutionally protected right is not accurate?"

Nope.

Anonymous said...

Nope.

No problem. You have the right to be wrong.

What must it be like to go through life with such incoherent thoughts? I don't know, and I'm not willing to subject myself to the kind of brain damage that would let me find out.
