Wimbledon admits good-looking female tennis players get centre court

This was being furiously denied just days ago. I mentioned it on 22nd.
"Good looks count for more than tennis ability when it comes to choosing which women play on Wimbledon's centre court. A succession of easy-on-the-eye unknowns have appeared in Wimbledon's prime arena this year while some of the top women's seeds have been relegated to lesser courts.

The All England Club admitted that physical attractiveness is taken into consideration. Spokesman Johnny Perkins said: "Good looks are a factor."

A BBC source said: "It's the Wimbledon play committee, not us who decides on the order of play. "But obviously it's advantageous to us if there are good-looking women players on Centre Court. "Our preference would always be a Brit or a babe as this always delivers high viewing figures."

Why not extend that logic and make them play naked?

Question: Hom many lesbians are on the Wimbledon play committee?

This is an outrage, I can understand good looking chicks getting more money than ugly broads, but centre court should be reserved to the very best players regardless of physical attraction. Yet another reason I refuse to watch sports, including the olympics. Those games have been corrupted, with the exception of boxing and ultimate fighting championship, perhaps.

Ever notice how when TV gets involved in a sport, they eventually destroy it? All sports have been turned into nothing more than wrestling. Lots of glitz. Lots of noise. Lots, of stupid "nick"-names and ridiculous costumes, and lots and lots and lots of commercials.

Wimbledon is not a public trust, it is an entertainment event, and has every right to arrange itself so as to attract larger crowds. If anyone else thinks they can do it better, let them start their own tournament.

Bemused, if that's the case, (and i agree with you that it is) then they should be made to describe themselves as an entertainment event, not a sporting event!

All sporting events are entertainment events.

BUT,

Not all entertainment events are sporting events.

---Then why not get rid of the men and have the ladies play naked?

Wimbledon may not be a public trust but they have a public history, they are supposed to be the ultimate in tennis, they have a reputation to uphold, a brand to protect. These actions endanger the credibility of the brand.

Besides, what kind of message are they sending to little girls? "Hey bitches, not only you have to be a great tennis player, but you better be sexy or you won't get center stage."

The men at Wimbledon attract viewers by playing at the highest level of human ability.

The women can't offer this and the fact that they play at a vastly inferior level makes them less interesting to watch for most people who are interested in tennis itself.

I would still have sympathy for those women who claim to want to be judged solely on ability if they had been consistent; however, at Wimbledon the female players demanded and got "equal" pay to the male players.

This despite playing demonstrably inferior tennis (there would be NO women at Wimbledon if the women competed directly against the men).

This despite not even playing the same amount of tennis as the men.

The only justification with any possible validity that I heard when this was decided was that the women weren't being payed equally for the same quality or amount of work, but for commercial reasons--because women's tennis could attract viewers in its own way, and thus the women were being paid for the crowds and viewership they could draw.

Well, if they are not being payed for their tennis, either in terms of skill or duration of play, then they can hardly complain when they are judged more in terms of what will attract viewers and thus provide a commercial return.

Edit: "paid" not "payed".
