Watermelon Art at California Fair Said to Be Racist

Art by youths at a juvenile jail angers black couple. Happy black faces are OUT, apparently:
"Colusa County officials are defending their display at the California State Fair after a black couple complained that a caricature of a smiling watermelon seed was racist. The "Waldo Watermelon Seed" drawing was removed this week after the couple said the image evoked negative stereotypes about blacks. The exhibit was intended to celebrate Colusa County's seed-producing crops, which generate $30 million a year.

Margaret Kemp-Williams, deputy counsel for Colusa County, says it was drawn by wards at a county juvenile hall where the population is roughly 40 percent black and 40 percent Hispanic. The wards created a display honoring watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin and tomato seeds. Kemp-Williams says each seed was depicted true to its real color.

Veronica Hannon Thrasher and her husband objected to the "Waldo Watermelon" caricature, which they said looked like "a happy black slave eating watermelon."

I used to eat a lot of watermelon when I was a kid growing up in the tropics. I guess I must be blacker than I thought. It's true that watermelon seeds ARE black so I guess that just eating them could be racist too. You can't be too careful these days.

When did we start letting 2 people decide anything. What ever happend to majority rules. Seems like some blacks just look for something to be mad about. I think we should just let them be mad, who cares if their mad. Stormewaters

Nobody said anything about the white seed right next to it? Geez, now I'm offended!!

What infuriates me is the fact that people seem to need to defend against this sort of nonsense. The correct response to Mrs Thrasher is as follows: "Madame, your irrational, insanely exaggerated sensitivities are not my responsibility". (I can't remember where I saw this but it should be a standard response to the PC brigade. By getting defensive, saying that the kids didn't know better, etc, you simply encourage these lunatics).

anon 5, you make an excellent point. One of the reasons people like Mrs. Thrasher whine this way is because they derive pleasure from seeing others beg their pardon, especially White others! And your suggestion for a response is also excellent. Problem is, we no longer live in a country where people have the will to respond to any of the members of these so-called "special interest groups".

Political correctness will doom this country. It is already well on it's way to changing our language, life style, political system, and many other things in our culture. Remember, PC, like terrorism, grows stronger as the people grow weaker.

Where've you been? I'll bet that like millions of other Americans, you weren't aware that the system of majority rule was quietly done away with a long time ago. It was replaced by "minority rule", and that doesn't only mean racial minorities. It is very common for 2 lesbians to walk into some socialist Mexifornia courtroom and change the lives of 300 million people!

How could this possibily happen? Ask your weak, brain-dead, fellow Americans!

The irony is that here in the South of the good ol' U.S.A., I see countless blacks (and whites too) buying and eating watermelons, fried chicken, chitlens, collard greens, and many other dishes that are stereotypically "black", but you know what? They like it! Just as I like pizza, corn on the cob, and a nice salad. Just as my Jewish friends love bagels, lox, and chicken soup. Just as my Italian friends love garlic bread, pasta, and bold red wines. Just as my Irish friends love ale and bangers and mash. It's comforting to know that people have their own tastes and that in this country, we can satisfy those tastes.

We, in the U.S. are all Americans first and foremost, but we also al have individual heritages that should be welcomed and remembered.

My question is where do the get the slave part? I don't see a collar, a whip, chains or anything else that would invoke the image of a slave in that picture. I guess that must be their own addition to it. Also, with the inmate ratio given, what was the race of the person who created the scene?

I think the point of this story is the people in jail have too much time on their hands. Instead of making racist watermellon art, they should be working the prison fields, picking up trash along the highway, doing manual labor ... you know - Jail Stuff.

No, YOU evoke negative sterotypes about blacks.

In the end, in spite of all the things people have tried to convince you of, if you are honest and paying attention you will notice that blacks are, generally speaking, the most racist people in this country, especially since they've learned that being "offended" can be VERY profitable!
