Free speech enemies still driven by their hate

Just when a group of Texas high school cheerleaders thought their fight for free speech was over, their school district has decided to go on offense. Kountze Independent School District has decided to appeal a state judge’s ruling that allowed the girls to paint Bible verses on run-through banners.

Earlier this month, State District Judge Steve Thomas determined that no law “prohibits cheerleaders from using religious-themed banners at school sporting events.”

Before that, the district, in response to a letter of complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, forbade the squad from further use of scripture—like “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”—on its banners. The squad fought back, with help from The Liberty Institute, and won its case in court.

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for Liberty Institute, criticized the district for continuing to spend taxpayer money on unnecessary litigation.

“I do not understand why the school district cannot simply accept that it lost and move on instead of continuing to fight against these cheerleaders who simply wanted to encourage the players with uplifting messages,” he said.

While a government-run school may not dictate religious speech be used, there is no constitutional ban on students exercising their First Amendment rights.

Personally, I wouldn't use the banners they choose, but if they wish, that's their right.

I wonder what the cheerleader's reaction would be if another school used Muslim-themed posters. Would they support that expression of free speech?

I would not care what another school used, I do not go to that school. I don't care what toilet paper you use 914 why would you care what kind of paper I use. I encourage them to use Bible verses, and I am Jewish and have no problem with these kids using Bible verses.

1:13 Toilet paper? Who said anything about toilet paper? For all I care you can use sandpaper if you want to.

Also, note that I have no problem with the cheerleader's using Bible verses. My statement that I wouldn't choose to do that in no way indicates disapproval of their actions.

I guess it's fine too when their muslim friends parade banners with Koran quotes!

Liberals go running to the courts if they lose at the polls and that's ok but if they win at the polls we are just supposed to shut up and be quiet!

If someone want to use the devil quotes from the Koran, that is fine with me. I do not control what goes on in other schools and we are in America, so if they want to use Koran quotes, good for them.

11:55 PM - Yeah rite! You'd even campaign for their right to display banners with Koran quotes wherever they want in US schools.
