Allowing politicians to be questioned and challenged is "taking away democracy"??

An undoubted Leftist viewpoint -- as long as the politician is one of their own:
"The key to a orderly town hall meeting, it seems, is a closed door. The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans turned its annual health care forum into a ticketed event mostly for its members, ensuring a friendly audience for U.S. Reps. Alcee Hastings of Miramar and Robert Wexler of Boca Raton. ‘The seniors and the veterans built this country, and no one is going to come in here, disrupt us and embarrass us or take away our democracy,’ said Tony Fransetta, president of the liberal, union-affiliated group. But outside the closed doors of the South County Civic Center was the hollering, finger-pointing and sign-waving that has defined public meetings on health care this month as Congress contemplates sweeping reforms. …

The atmosphere outside the town hall resembled a county fair. People carried American flags as well as umbrellas to shield them from the sun. A high school marching band played upbeat tunes. A handful of seniors sat in lawn chairs in the shade, their placards flapping against their tuna fish sandwiches.”

This is why they call it "Flori-DUH"!

I'm not very surprised at the conduct of the people at this "meeting". (actually it was a left-wing ralley?) After all, electing a convicted bribe-taker like Alcee Hastings, and an outright Socialist like Wexler, should tell you something about the voters in this area. Only now are some of them waking-up and realizing who they've given power to. This should serve as a warning to all voters come the next election.

According to Wikipedia, Democracy is defined as follows: "In political theory, democracy describes a small number of related forms of government and also a political philosophy. Even though there is no specific, universally accepted definition of 'democracy', there are two principles that any definition of democracy includes, equality and freedom. These principles are reflected by all citizens being equal before the law, and have equal access to power. Additionally, all citizens are able to enjoy legitimized freedoms and liberties, which are usually protected by the constitution."

So how can people showing up at a townhall meeting to talk with their elected representative somehow 'take away our democracy'? Sounds like democracy in action to me. But then notice Mr. Fransetta's exact words of 'our democracy'. I wonder whom is included, and excluded, when he uses the word 'our'?

This hand picked group of union people wasn't there simply to talk to their reps. They were there to cover and protect the corrupt, lying Demoncrats, who were there to con everyone into thinking there's a growing wave of advocates for the Marxist takeover of our health care system. If you've been paying attention, you would have noticed how this tactic is being used in different places to create the illusion that it's wide spread. As usual, the MSM is the tool being used to foster that illusion.

The United States of America is a Republic, not a democracy

"The United States of America is a Republic, not a democracy"

---It's a democratic republic, our elected officials are called "representatives" or "public servants." They are held accountable to our wishes, if they don't do what we want, we can vote them out of office.

Hastings and Wexler survive because they run in mostly liberal districts, make no mistake about that.

You're right Bobby, which means it's the weak, gullible, mindless American people who are at fault for all the political problems we have. Don't blame the elected crooks, blame those who keep returning them to power.

Albert Einstein once said that, "the definition of true insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results". Sounds like American elections, doesn't it.

The American people are becoming known as some of the dumbest on the planet, a richly deserved reputation.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

" And what is a good citizen? Simply one who never says, does or thinks anything that is unusual. Schools are maintained in order to bring this uniformity up to the highest possible point. A school is a hopper into which children are heaved while they are still young and tender; therein they are pressed into certain standard shapes and covered from head to heels with official rubber-stamps.” – H. L. Mencken

---I wouldn't go that far, our participation in the townhalls has been brilliant, Obama's poll numbers are rapidly eroding, we are making our voices heard.

Next year we can elect a brand new congress, once the republicans take over the house it will be difficult for the democrats to pass any bad laws.

The American people aren't stupid, maybe they make mistakes, maybe the independents don't get it until they live with it, but now the independents are getting it and whoever controls the independents controls the country.

The real problem with the town-hall meetings is that the so-called 'right' refuses to allow the so-called 'left' to speak. The yelling and screaming to talk over anyone asking a direct question, and the heckling of the main speaker are NOT part of America's idea of 'free speech.' If the right wants to be heard, why not sit politely while others present opposing positions, while expecting those same others to sit politely while the right presents its position? But in order to get a polite audience, the radical right has to be locked out.

I'd be willing to bet that not one of those hecklers has read so much as one word of ANY of the five senate bills OR the house bill. And yet they think they know what they're talking about. What am I saying? The right isn't thinking, because it's so wrapped up in mindless lies. How do I know they're lies? Because at this point, no one really knows what the final law will look like. There are too many bills waiting to be chosen to be enacted.
