"Remarkably, columnists and playwrights are promoting censorship. That is, they want ‘hate speech’ laws. This position is so obviously juvenile, and counter-productive, it’s a shame that it has acceptance in the mainstream. It takes probably a minute’s reflection to realize censorship will only beget more violence. Instead of ’rounding up’ the von Brunns of the world before they act, such censorship will only motivate them to act because they’ll have little left to lose. If they don’t shoot hated minorities, they will shoot the very cops who come to arrest them.”

It's because columnists and playwrights, notoriously liberal and left-wing, believe they can "customize" the censorship so that it doen't apply to them, but rather, only to those they disagree with.
"Customize the censorship"? Not exactly, I think they are more of the kind that feel that anyone who disagrees with them is a criminal and should be punished.
It's a hallmark of leftist controlled societies that after they gain power and purge the people who completely and utterly oppose them they turn around and purge those who almost completely agree with them as well simply because they will tolerate no dissension and no debate.
People who are willing to commit dangerous acts for what they believe , tend to believe very strongly that they are correct.
People who believe strongly that they are correct tend to believe , that in a debate, they have the advantage , due to actaully being correct.
This probably stops a lot of people from doing violent acts. They will oftentimes reason, "If I could just get my argument clearer most everyone will see the ttruth in it. That way I can do so much more good than being a martyr to my cause."
But if you take that possiblity away from them by making the arguments illegal, well then they will often start to consider being a martyr to their cause in some violent outburst.
