Court turns down student over religious speech
What part of "prohibiting the free exercise" of religion do the judges not understand?
"The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a student who complained that high school officials violated her constitutional rights when they turned off her microphone during her religion-tinged graduation speech.
The justices said Monday they will not revive a lawsuit filed by Brittany McComb of Henderson, Nev. challenging the actions of Clark County school officials. A federal appeals court ruled previously ruled against her.
During McComb's speech at the Foothill High School graduation in 2006, officials turned off McComb's microphone when the school valedictorian strayed from an approved text to provide a graphic account of Jesus' crucifixion and credit God for her success in school.

Thanking God is one thing, but going off on a delusional tirade is another.
Bob,
Amazing how you could fail to thank God and go into a delusional tirade of your own in just one short sentence. The young lady in question is guilty of being long-winded and padding her speech (a common failing of most of those who are picked for speaking at such events) but only in her insistence of taking a small event and making a large problem out of it could she be considered delusional.
She is in fact showing signs of being swayed by the arguments and rhetoric of the Democratic party by her insistence on her rights to do as she pleases regardless of what she had previously agreed to do.
Mark your calendar... This Sunday 11-22-09
Last week CBS announced that the Obama White House has banned Fox News from "their grounds". I found it appalling that a viable news agency was being denied access to the President. Where was our first Amendment? It was a radical move even for Obama. Now I see why:
This Sunday Fox news, is going to air a very important documentary about Barack Obama, Sunday night at 9 PM Eastern. 6 PM Pacific.
The report will go back to Obama's earlier days, showing even then his close ties to radical Marxist professors, friends, spiritual advisers, etc. It will also reveal detail his ties to Rev. Wright for 20+ yrs. How he was participating with this man, and not for the reasons he states!
The report has uncovered more of Obama's radical past and we will see things that no one in the media is willing to put out there. It will be a segment to remember.
Mark your calendar and pass this on to everyone you know: Sunday night, 8 PM. CT; 6 PM PT. Democrat or Republican, this report will open your eyes to how YOUR country is being sold down the road to Totalitarian Socialism.. If you care about the direction of our country, pass this notice on to everyone you know.

Your piece is false and just a case of internet rumor.

The answer seems to be that this item was merely a recirculation of outdated information about a program that had aired the previous year (October 2008), not something that was about to air in October 2009 (when there was a resurgence of interest in the e-mailed item).
Back on Sunday, 5 October 2008, the FOX News show Hannity's America was devoted to an hour-long program on Obama & Friends: History of Radicalism. But, as noted, that program was broadcast long before the current e-mail promoting it began circulating.
It also isn't the case that Fox was planning to repeat the original Sean Hannity piece (or a different show on the same topic). We spoke with a FOX News representative who confirmed that neither Obama & Friends nor any other similar documentary about Barack Obama is (or was) scheduled to be aired by Fox in 2009.
So what happens when the students thanks both her Moms, or both her Dads.
Will that be objectional to those who weren't raised in a divorced family or gay family?
This is what religious students will have to say from now on:
Fellow students,
I am very proud of my achievements in academics and receiving the position of valedictorian. Unfortunately, the State bars me from telling you why I believe I was able to achieve such an honor. I will only hope you find the inspiration that I did and to wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors.
Thank you,
"So what happens when the students thanks both her Moms, or both her Dads."
---Oh come on, very few people are raised like that and the ones that are turn out normal. A family by choice is better than a family by accident in any circumstance.
"Did you wear your white hood when you wrote that opinion?"
---Is Obama black? Yes. Has Obama and his fellow racists used his race to promote him? Yes. Has the obamaphiles condemmed anyone who doesn't worship our supreme negro as a racist? Yes.
Am I a Klansman? No. I like good blacks, good jews and good gays. I like people who triumph because of their efforts and not their minority status.
I also don't believe in white-guilt, none of my ancestors ever owned slaves nor practiced segregation. So why the hell should I feel guilty for being white?
When I gave my speech, i didn't have to turn in a draft to be approved by anyone. It was my speech and I guess the trusted the Valedictorian of all people to act classy and respectful.
Skools are so scared of religion it's laughable.
"forgive them, for they know not what they do."
Okay, thanking God is cool..no problem. Going into the graphic detail of Jesus' execution at a high school graduation ceremony...bad taste and poor choice of forum, and I don't disagree with the school.
If the scenario was she thanked both her moms, ok. If she explained the graphic detail of her moms having sex and coming up with the idea to have a daughter, I'd turn off the microphone.
The school has a right to turn off the power, but not to cover her mouth.
This country is dying. It's being killed by political correctness. And apparently, the people lack the mental capacity and the moral strength to stop it.
"And apparently, the people lack the mental capacity and the moral strength to stop it."
Worse, they lack the mental capacity to even recognise what's going on.
While I am a firm believer in the protections of the First Amendment I do not believe that 'prohibiting the free exercise thereof' extends to permitting her to go off on a totally inappropriate frolic.
The public expression of an individual's private faith is inviolate - but the school needn't give anyone an unrestricted platform to do it in a situation where others cannot realistically leave or voice their opposing position.
