NY: Judge orders reinstatement of boy suspended over rosary
We read:
"A federal judge says a New York school must reinstate a 13-year-old boy who was suspended for wearing rosary beads. Raymond Hosier, a 13-year-old Schenectady, New York, boy, filed a federal suit Tuesday against his middle school after he was repeatedly suspended for wearing a rosary, which he says is in memory of his older brother who died in a bike accident. …
Oneida Middle School officials contend Raymond Hosier violated a policy banning gang-related clothing because the prayer beads sometimes are worn as gang symbols.”

I'd believe the gang symbol explanation myself. Rosary beads are not normally worn as necklaces.

Maybe not Jon, but the beads are an official article of the Catholic faith, like wearing the star of David is for jews. If this PC'ized govt indoctrination camp is so concerned about gang activity, why don't they eliminate the gangs from their school, instead of picking on people who are simply honoring their faith? We have a Constitutional right to worship our religion as we choose. I know of no Constitutional right to belong to a gang. Well, not yet anyway.
Then again, taking action against the gangs, most of whom are blacks and illegals, would violate the EduNazi's PC standards, wouldn't it.
"Rosary beads are not normally worn as necklaces."
While that may be the case, is it necessarily against Catholic teaching to do so?
But the real problem is that fringe 9and not so fringe) groups continue to commandeer various symbols for their own use, tainting their meaning and preventing Joe Citizen from displaying them without fear, shame, or embarrassment. Consider the rainbow, once a Biblical symbol now represents the gay community. Or all of the various clothing and jewelry styled associated with gangs.
Assuming this kids' motives were genuine, he was simply caught up in a system that is relying on dangerous means to a noble end.
Well said Anon 2:15. And if they can't eliminate the gangs from the school, do the next best thing, require "all" students to wear the same school uniform. That would end much of the problem.
2:18 AM. I agree, there should be school uniforms, as kids are in schools to be educated not strut around in a fashion parade or promote their personal religions or allegiances. The school is an insitution which should have the right to impose its own rules and regulations (as approved by the relevant educational authority).
It has the authority. It simply lacks the will. Addiction to all things PC will do that.

Good thing that I use a Mac.
Anon 2:17 asks "While that may be the case, is it necessarily against Catholic teaching to do so?"
THe answer is, it depends on your version of Catholicism. For Roman Catholics, yes, you are not supposed to wear rosary beads as jewelery. For American Catholics, well most of them don't really understnad their faith, so they think it is ok.
" For Roman Catholics, yes, you are not supposed to wear rosary beads as jewelery"
And they still wear it, but as a mark of devotion.
So they wear it.
