No free speech in Philadelphia

McCain T-shirt gets man arrested.
"A man wearing a McCain-Palin T-shirt during a Philadelphia celebration on election night was arrested, cuffed and stuffed into a police cruiser, and supporters said it was for no more than wearing the endorsement of the GOP nominees for president and vice-president. Although the man protested that he didn't want to cause any trouble, officers manhandled and arrested him, the video posted on YouTube shows.

Philadelphia Police Sgt. Ray Evers told WND the man, whose name was not released, was arrested for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. "He was causing large crowds to form around him," Evers said, adding that he also "was not listening to police commands." "He was asked several times to leave the area," the sergeant said. "He refused several commands from police to leave the area."

Why should he leave the area? He was doing nothing wrong.

Perhaps he was arrested for his own safety, or to prevent a riot. The crowd sounds rather hostile. And we know what liberals are like when someone voices an opposing viewpoint.

shouldn;t the police have protected him from the crowd?

It's quite clear why he was told to leave the area. Obviously, the natives were very restless and the Police wanted to avoid a real problem. They most likely saved him from being assaulted. Also, why would this guy go into a clearly hostile crowd, with his "camera-equipped" buddy? Looking for his U-Tube moment?

On the other hand, it was a clear violation of his First Amendment rights re: political speech. Now that our government is totally in the hands of the far-Left, we had better get used to this kind of thing.

I don't think they were trying to stomp on his rights, I think they were trying to save his life. It is sad that they had to do it. As for protecting him, they would have been up a creeek without a paddle if that crowd had attacked.

Hello Good Gentles All!

Forgive my bluntness but I feel I must speak. I have been silent too long.

What we are witnessing (actually have been witnessing for about one year) is the systematic construction of a cult of personality.

This police thuggery, Mathew's most recent quote and the Post's admission of its deliberate bias in favor of Obama are just a few examples of what is happening.

Just today Brown, the British prime minister, stated that it is time to sieze on this situation and create a single world order:

"The alliance between Britain and the U.S. -- and more broadly between Europe and the U.S. -- can and must provide leadership, not in order to make the rules ourselves, but to lead the global effort to build a stronger and more just international order."

Brown Continues:

"Uniquely in this global age, it
is now in our power to come together so that 2008 is remembered not just for the failure of a financial crash that engulfed the world but for the resilience and optimism with which we faced the storm, endured it and prevailed."

"...And if we learn from our experience of turning unity of purpose into unity of action, we can together seize this moment of change in our world to create a truly global society."

Brown concludes:

"My message is that we must be: internationalist not protectionist; interventionist not neutral; progressive not reactive; and forward looking not frozen by events. We can seize the moment and in doing so build a truly global society."

Winston Churchill, wherever he is (hopefully with God), must be in tears to hear a fellow Englishman speak thus.

Obama. as a strident communist, will aid and abet this worldwide usrupation of our God given liberties. Do not be fooled, he will say that he is doing this for your own good, that desparate times call for desparate measures. Many people have ended up in chanins for their own good.

There is much historical precedent for what is occurring. Inevitably, all previous societies that have gone this way have ended in blood and ashes. We are making the same mistake and we will reap the same result.

Santayana was right. Sadly, I fear there is nothing that can halt this process. The weakminded and the ignorant will impose this disaster on us little understanding what they have done. However, we, as thoughful people, aware of the past and knowledgable of human weakness, can prepare ourselves even as we watch the gathering storm.

I am no apocolyptic visionary. I am not suggesting a second comming or the four horsemen. Only God knows these things. But I am a man who has seen enough of history and who knows human nature well enough to see the facts before my eyes. The ancient Roman adage holds true today; "The wise man knows and understands the world in which he lives."

I am sorry to speak so plainly but time is growing short.

We are truly becomming pilgrims in an unholy land.

Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum,

InFides

And so the thugocracy begins, where else, in the land of the Liberty Bell.

Change we did not need.

Anon #2,
"Now that our government is totally in the hands of the far-Left, we had better get used to this kind of thing."

It is by our "getting used to it" that we shall be undone. If we accept this as the norm, we are by default endorsing it. No, now is the time to stand up and fight for what we beieve to be our rights given to us by God & certified by the constitution.

All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

I can ask the same question. Why is it that every time there is "police brutality" on a black perosn, there always seems to be someone there with a camera.

At least in this case there was a reason to have the camera, to videotape the morons on parade!

I was in Miami at the Oakland vs. Dolphins game last year. My team, the Raiders were beating the crap out of Miami. Some Miami fans didnt like it and we were screaming and taunting them like crazy. it was good fun. Just before half time though they sent some state troopers into the stands. There was one at teh top of the stairs on both sides of our section, the bottom of the stairs on both sides, and also at both ends of our row. That didnt slow us down any and at one point someone behind us threw a soda at us. At that point WE were kicked out for having the audacity of someone else throwing something at us.

I have never left a comment on this site but feel it necessary in this case.

While I am a McCain supporter, that guy was an idiot! He clearly went into the crowd (camera following) to provoke something (anything). It could have gotten very ugly, very quickly. And I know whereof I speak - I live not too far from the intersection in the video (that's City Hall in the background). I am also old enough to remember the race riots of the late sixties and early seventies, although Philadelphia did not reach the level of intensity seen in other cities and I don't think we're headed there (yet).

While free speech is one of the foundations of our government, actions such as that guy's are irresponsible. Deliberately provoking a riot put not only him in danger but those around him - including the Philly PD who generally do a great job. Additionally, he failed to make any real point - here in Philly this video has yet to be noticed, even by those who love to criticize police/government/etc.

Well said, Sir!

mcnasty,.... i said "get used to it" simply because we have no choice. The people (and the media) have chosen and all we can do now is live with it. Unless of course, you can find something that could be used to impeach Obama. But remember, you'll also have to impeach the congress, since that's where the real damage will be done.

Remember, the far-left relys on the "abundant" weakness of the American people to gain power and impalement their policies.

If he was asked to leave the area by the police for his own safety, then the police should have explained that to him. Getting tough with him did no good.

It also taught the mob a lesson that if you don't like something, start menancing behavior and the police will arrest the cause of the discomfort.

Isn't it amazing that those who preach tolerance don't have a single bit of it themselves.

As an aside to Blackened, I would have loved to see the look on the face of the Miami fan who threw the soda confronted by a couple of big, angry, silver-and-black body-painted Raider fans in leather with spikes sticking up out of the shoulder pads. You talk about asking for it! (For those outside the U.S. some of the Raider fanatics are analogous to English soccer hooligans.)
