Trump Campaign Accuses CNN of ‘Censorship’

The Donald J. Trump for President campaign accused CNN of engaging in “censorship” and “epitomiz[ing] the meaning of fake news” Tuesday by refusing to air a Trump campaign ad on its network.

The ad, titled “First 100 Days,” began airing on networks across the country Monday. It touts President Donald Trump’s “bold actions” taken in his first 100 days “to restore prosperity, keep Americans safe and secure, and hold the government accountable.” In particular, the ad’s narrator noted, “you wouldn’t know” about the president’s accomplishments “from watching the news.”

“The mainstream media mislead, misguide, deceive, and distract. CNN epitomizes the meaning of fake news and has proven it by rejecting our paid campaign ad.”

“The mainstream media lies. Don’t let fake news dominate the truth,” the ad says. “President Trump promised to make America great again, and he is fulfilling his promise to you.”

CNN declined to air the ad, citing objections to the depiction of the “fake news” media.

“CNN requested the advertiser remove the false graphic that says mainstream media is ‘fake news,'” the network’s communications department tweeted Tuesday. “The mainstream media is not fake news, and therefore the ad is false. Per our policy, it will be accepted only if that graphic is deleted. Those are the facts.”

The Crony News Network would never accept an ad from the US government unless a Democrat authorised it.

Anon 1:15,

The ad cannot be from the US government and is in fact being sponsored and paid for by the Trump re-election campaign.

CNN is a private company that can run whatever ads they want.

For the Trump campaign to call this "censorship" is ridiculous.

True believers in free speech would never demand that the ad be run if the company disagreed with it. Compelled speech is not free speech.

CNN has just claimed that every ad they broadcast is guaranteed to be 100% true. Let the lawsuits against CNN begin! It should be interesting to hear them claim in court that they can't be held accountable for every add they broadcast, after they refused this ad by claiming it isn't true.

Paul Weber,

CNN said no such thing nor made any such claim.

Anon 5:22 - I agree with you to some extent, but the airwaves are not free.
Television stations use licenced wavelengths that are publicly owned.
There is a limit to them - both logistically and economically.
A similar argument to the shopping mall being the modern town square could certainly be made.
In any event, their objection to the ad is pretty weak. The ad merely complains that MSM tend to report the negative about Trump rather than the positive. I don't think many objective observers could dispute that fact.

Anon 7:26,

You may have an argument if CNN were an over the air network. They are not. Cable is not run over publicly owned airwaves.

Secondly, I cannot believe anyone would think that a company has to run an ad that is critical of them. I can't see taxi cabs being forced to carry ads for Uber which say "Stop Paying for Expensive Taxi Rides."

I think the objection to the ad is dead on. Even if one accepts your premise of "reporting the negative" about Trump, the objection here was not that CNN reported "fake news" but that the network itself is "fake news." No objective observer could say that. There's a difference between a story and a network and the Trump campaign tried to blur that line.

Trump and some / many of his advisers have a skewed view of the First Amendment. As this incident again shows, the people that surround him believe they have the right to demand that other say what they want them to say. In many ways, Trump is no different than the college groups that stifle dissenting viewpoints.

No matter what, this is not a case of "censorship," and the fact that the Trump campaign would label it as such is insulting.
