Wrong to portray a woman in China as not speaking fluent English?

We read:
"The portrayal of a young Asian woman speaking broken English in a Super Bowl ad being run by U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra against Michigan incumbent Debbie Stabenow is bringing charges of racial insensitivity.

“Some Asian-Americans may be offended by the stereotype that is portrayed in the spot,” said Robert Kolt, who teaches advertising part-time at Michigan State University and had previewed a number of Sunday’s Super Bowl ads. “Pete seems like a nice guy in the ad, but I think he is wasting a lot of money now.

The 30-second ad was filmed in California and never mentions China directly. It opens with the sound of a gong and shows a young Asian woman riding a bike on a narrow path lined by rice paddies.
Stopping her bike, the woman smiles into the camera and says:

“Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow. Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spenditnow.”

The scene then shifts to Hoekstra telling viewers near a cozy fire, “I think this race is between Debbie Spenditnow and Pete Spenditnot.”

The Hoekstra campaign set up a website, www.DebbieSpendItNow.com , that features the ad and includes Chinese writing, paper lanterns, parade dragons and Stabenow’s face on a Chinese fan. It accuses the Democratic senator of “pouring American dollars into the Chinese economy.”

Off topic:

I realize many of you aren't American, but last night was the superbowl, and it's famous for new/funny commercials. Check out what they thought was a funny idea:

John Stamos is teasing some woman with yogurt, then tries to eat it himself, the woman massively headbutts him, knocking him to the floor, and then eats the yogurt. Had the roles been reversed, feminists would be demanding the ad exec who approved that ad be jailed.

I'm pretty sure this will be on youtube eventually, but without controversy.

Yes, i can understand how many on the Left would be offended by a factual ad, especially the ultra-leftist cow known as Debbie Stabenow. But it will take many more Republicans to take-the-gloves-off in order to win in Nov.

So let me get this right, my best friend, who happens to be ethnic Chinese, escaped from Vietnam some years after the war ended speaks four languages with english being her weakest. She has a severe accent and does not speak "American" english well. In order to not be considered racist, I should not speak to her anymore? Or should I correct her every word? Please tell me, I don't know what to do in these days of extreme political correctness!!

It should have been done completely in Mandarin or Cantonese with subtitles. That would have lessened the ability to slam it.

@Anon 400, You should stop being friends with your Chinese friend, until they learn the error of their ways and return to their enlightend communist paradise. That is the PC thing to do.

I can understand why they don't like the ad, the truth hurts, doesn't it?

Anon 2:50: Thanks for the laugh! When I watched that commercial last night, I knew there were going to be people crying racism and I immediately thought of her. No, I won't be ending my friendhip with her, she is an incredible woman who has more morals in her pinky than I have ever had, but there is hope for me yet!!
Anon 6:03: I too, live in the Detroit area and have heard similar sentiments but have rebutted it every time someone has mentioned it.

For those who may have missed it, ROC is Taiwan

But it is true that there are many English accents and not all are equally understood. "Geordie" speech -- from N.E. England -- is notoriously hard for others to understand, though Scots understand it well

So, is every Hollywood movie that has a person speaking any kind of broken English at all racist? If you ask them (Hollywood) they would likely tell you they are trying to be "authentic" or "real". So now because it is a conservative and it slams the unfortunate truth the left has bestowed upon us it is "racist"

Until you realize Hollyweird IS racist. They cloak them selves in a facade of arteests and bellow a holier than thou attitude eclectic superior intellect. Yet just under the glitter you'll see a sewer of wallowing children, who's glass ego could not stand to the slightest of criticism. Yet, they MUST marginalize someone so they can crow like a peacock that they are not like THOSE people to feed their massive ego. By the way this would also apply to most left leaning academics, lawyers and politicians.
