British jeweller in race probe over his ban on gypsies after string of raids on his shop

The global Left just cannot accept that all groups are not the same
"In the past 18 months alone jeweller Michael Plant has repeatedly been targeted by Eastern European thieves. At first he left it to the police to track down those responsible and hoped they would eventually be brought to justice. But with no sign of any arrests and still more raids, he decided to ban them from his shop - only to be threatened with prosecution for racial hatred.

'I'm not racist, but the fact is I have been targeted repeatedly by Eastern European criminals,' said Mr Plant, 62, yesterday. 'I should have a right to say which people come into my shop and not face allegations of racial discrimination. 'Obviously I don't think all of them are bad, but how can I distinguish who is good and who is bad? Some people coming in to this country illegally seem to have more rights than me.'

After each raid he called in the police to investigate but with no arrests and more stock stolen he decided to make a stand and placed a sign in his window which read: 'Sorry, we do not serve Rumanian or East European gypsies.'

After a tip-off from a member of the public, a senior police officer warned him that if it was not removed immediately he could be charged with producing racially offensive material. 'The sign was written in anger after the robbery,' said Mr Plant. 'I feared we would get more in that afternoon. 'I just put it straight in the door. The police took offence at the word "gipsies". 'I've had several robberies and the capture of criminals is very low.

Police said Mr Plant had fallen foul of the Race Relations Act which recognises gipsies and travellers as ethnic groups. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'Police received a report that a shop was displaying a sign which contained writing that was deemed to be offensive. 'Officers have spoken with the owner of the shop. He has been advised that the notice is offensive and he has since removed it.

'We take all complaints of this nature extremely seriously.' [What they DON'T take seriously is theft]

It's so much easier for the police to prosecute otherwise law-abiding folk on such nebulous charges and get their "action" statistics inflated, than the more difficult work of tracking down and arresting thieves and miscreants. As for gypsies, I was on a tramcar in Manchester UK a few years ago where there was a group of gypsy women with their children, and when ticket inspectors came in they dropped their drinks and food and got off very quickly, so it was obvious they were traveling without buying tickets!

What the shop owner ought to do is keep the door locked. Then post a sign that tells prospective clients to knock or ring the doorbell to be admitted for security purposes. And if he doesn't like the person outside the shop, don't let them in.

Otherwise Law Abiding citizens are always easier to control.

That's why "gun control" laws do not work, and only serve to disarm the population.

Maybe, depending on the value of his inventory and the costs of the robberies, this shop-owner should hire private security. It might be cheaper (and less "offensive" to those sensitive thieves) to do so.

This guy isn't that bright. Instead of buying a stock sign that says "management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone", he scrawls one himself.

did he take any preventative measures? Like video cameras monitoring the merchandise? At least then the crooks would be identified.

Also, the keeping the door locked and security guard suggestion from earlier posts are great.

Clearly, this guy needs to think things through a little more.

Remember, the police receive their orders from politicians. The police are not free to do what they think is right, but what they're told to do by those politicians.

"Police said Mr Plant had fallen foul of the Race Relations Act which recognises gipsies and travellers as ethnic groups."

More Liberal bleeding-heart CRAP.

Gypos and Knackers are Caucasians just like Queen Elizabeth, Gordon Brown and Bono.

The Brit government have caved into the political correctness of the whinning Liberal do-gooders.

Very true bogside. It's just one of the prices the people must pay for their weakness in allowing their govt to be out of control.

Pikeys are mud. Sure they are Caucasian just like many Latinos but one shouldn't go comparing them with Europeans. Even Hitler new the difference...

In this case cameras wouldn't help because the gyps wouldn't be convicted anyway. After causing havoc for a few weeks they continue to other countries and avoid trial. The stuff they steel has already left the country with other muds.

I also doubt it would be any less controversial to "deny service to anyone" because usually it's illegal to deny service based on one's ethnicity. I don't know if this is true in the UK but I get the impression that the problem at hand stems from Gippos being an ethnic group. The sign itself might not be a problem if it didn't name the group from whom service is denied but the shop keeper might come under fire anyways if he could be shown to discriminate based on ethnucuty.

It's even easier.

He locks the front door and does the buzzing them in thing. He has a security guard watch the camera watching the front door. Some disreputables come up, the security guard says he isn't sure but "that one might have a gun".

What jewelry store owner in his right mind would let an armed person into his store??

Even if it goes to court, the owner relies on the advice of his security guard. The guard said he suspected one of the defendants had a gun. He didn't know for sure, how could he, but he suspected it, and voiced these suspicions to the owner, who took steps.

You see, it's all perfectly easy when you want it to be.

The only problem with the gun idea is that the store owner and the security guard are legally required to call the police every time they suspect someone is packing. You have to remember that British gun laws are extremely strict. Also security guards don't come free of charge you know.

I presume everybody has also noticed the socialist politicians' contempt for property rights here.
