Atheists are a protected class?

We read:
"While it was the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that defended teen atheist Jessica Ahlquist in her successful quest to have a prayer mural removed from her Rhode Island public high school, the FFRF is also rushing to the young girl’s defense.

Citing discrimination, the organization is filing a civil rights complaint after numerous florists refused to deliver flowers to the girl.

The FFRF reportedly tried to have a dozen roses delivered to Ahlquist with the message, ”Congratulations, and hang in there, with admiration from FFRF.”

After being denied by three florists in the Cranston, Rhode Island, area, the group was eventually able to secure an order from a business located in Connecticut.

According to FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor, Twins Florist, one of the businesses that refused to deliver, violated the Civil Rights Act when the business discriminated based on Ahlquist’s atheism. Gaylor released the receipt order from the florist, which reads, “I will not deliver to this person.”

The florists, though, disagree with Gaylor’s stance on the matter. Turnto10.com reports that Raymond Santilli of Flowers by Santilli, one of the companies the FFRF attempted to order from, explains that a foundation representative told him that the person delivering the flowers might need police protection.

He maintains that he has the right to deliver — or not — to whomever he chooses, because he owns the shop.

Twins Florist owner Marina Plowman echoed these sentiments. “I just chose not to do it. Nothing personal, it was a choice that I made. It was my right, so I did that,” she said. ”I’m an independent owner and I can chose whoever I want, whenever I want.”

Yes he's free to choose who he wants as customers, but he'll soon go out of business if he only selects ones he personally likes or because of their views that he likes or doesn't.

Anon 3:55,
Your right if the majority of people in his comunity are atheists. Somehow I doubt it.

This is also yet another clear example of how very important the concept of majority rule is, and why the left worked so hard, for so long, to abolish it.

We obviously need to return to more simple times when atheists were publicly hanged for being the vermin they are.

All biz owners live or die by their judgment on a hundred different decisions every day. It's his right to make that determination for himself.

Bird of Paradise equates atheism with leftist. What a biased point of view. Many conservation libertarians, such as Ayn Rand and Robert Heinlein, were more conservation that more faith based American conservations. For a view of what is a Conservative Atheist, check out the Conservative Atheist at http://www.theatheistconservative.com/ . As Ayn Rand has written, the right and the left are basically the same for the want to restrict individual liberties for the benefit of a social agenda or for their personal myths and religions.

Um, no, he equated the ACLU w/atheism. Here's what he said, watch:

The ACLU is a leftists group founded by a communist Its no different then any other leftist groups

See. No mention of atheism, tho it is more often espoused by those who self-label as being on the left.

As to the right/left distinction in general, remember that those terms both denoted forms of socialism when they were coined and when writers such as Rand used them. Intense propaganda since then has tried to make us think the terms denote opposites but they really denote sames.

The propaganda has only half succeeded. These days they are more like the nicknames of sports teams, signifying no real ideas other than as a hat rack on which to hang marketing slogans. You guys are not the first to trip over the change not will you be the last.

The real opposites here are between those who would let others live and believe (or not) in freedom vs those who won't. I'd put myself in the "you live your life, I'll live mine" camp and say that if a florist doesn't wanna deliver, then find another florist.

The little Godless freak should have had the balls to ignore something she didnot like for the 4 years of high school and pay attention to the important things in life, like how to avoid insulting the entire town she lives in and school she goes to.

A civil rights issue?
Strictly speaking, they are not refusing a service to the girl. It is a political pressure group which was ordering the flowers, and they were refusing to serve them.

Quite, what does "left" and "right" mean in politics? The self-identified 'left' say Hitler was 'right' and the self-identified 'right' say he was 'left'. Hitler was as Hitler did - and so is/does everyone else!
