Fla. Teacher Suspended for Posting Anti-Gay Marriage Views on Facebook

We read:
"A Florida history teacher has been suspended after it was revealed he wrote about his objections to gay marriage on his personal Facebook page. Jerry Buell, who was Mount Dora High School’s “Teacher of the Year” last year, reportedly wrote that he almost “threw up” in response to New York’s legalization of same-sex marriage in July.

According to Fox News, the school system received a complaint about the comment Tuesday and suspended and reassigned Buell the next day.

“It was my own personal comment on my own personal time on my own personal computer in my own personal house, exercising what I believed as a social studies teacher to be my First Amendment rights,” Buell told Fox.

Chris Patton, a communications officer for the school system, told Fox there was concern about how Buell might treat gay students in his class. He also disputed the notion that the comments were private.

“He has [more than] 700 friends,” Patton said. “How private is that – really? Social media can be troubling if you don’t respect it and know that just because you think you are in a private realm – it’s not private.”

He vowed Buell will not return to the classroom until “a thorough job of looking at everything – past or previous writings” is complete.

Buell said he thought the school is trying to silence Christian teachers, warning them not to express their views.

A pretty clear 1st Amendment violation by the school there.

Update

The school has now backed down

The left - and most educators are fanatical leftists - will not be happy until no viewpoint but theirs is allowed to be expressed.

Are you straight? - don't ask, don't tell and the left won't bother you.

Where is the Teacher's Union in this?

Once again - people expose their opinions for all to see and then wonder why there are consequences in the line of "business" they are in, especially teaching students who will then know of the teacher's bigotry.

A union defending a conservative issue? It is to laugh.

You mean the "Leftist" teachers union. They will said with the gays.

The teachers opinion re: gay marriage is a political statement, and therefor protected speech. Clearly protected. This indocrination camp is simply using intimidation to scare him into line. Their line. A good lawyer should be able to put a real good dent in their bank account.

The school totally backed down, but it took word of their misbehavior to get out. Mr. Buell is now back in the classroom.

Interesting how the complainer didn't even have the teacher, and graduated 9 years ago!

This complaint never should have been acted upon in the first place. There seems to be no indication that Buell's personal opinion impacts his work with the children, so ignore the single crackpot complainer and leave the teacher where he belongs.

Brian,.... that single complainer concept is destroying this country. It's what allows two lesbians to walk into some liberal Calf. courtroom and change the lives of 320 million people.

Yeah, I guess no social injustice should be challenged in court. Millions of people have been affected positively and negatively by all kinds of laws initiated by a few brave people. Maybe we should still have slavery or racial segregation, imprisonment of homosexuals, and deny women a vote, or men who don't own enough property, etc.
