MI: Ole Miss to replace mascot

We read:
"Ole Miss students voted Tuesday to find a replacement for the Colonel Reb mascot. Nearly 75 percent of participating students (2,510 of 3,366 votes) voted in favor of beginning a student-led initiative to create a new representative for the Ole Miss Rebels, according to the Daily Mississippian.

Colonel Reb was cast off as the on-field mascot in 2003 as the school continued its move away from Old South symbolism. Since then, the teams have been without an on-field mascot.

The vote on Tuesday determined whether the process would begin to find a successor to Colonel Reb, an old Southern gent with a cane and floppy hat. Some of his diehard fans had been campaigning against the move.

There's something wrong with a Southern gent??

Well, the majority has spoken, it's obvious that 75% of Ole Miss students are a bunch of self-hating southeners, who needs Bill Maher to ridicule Mississippi when Mississipians do it to themselves? What's next? Will they start speaking like a bunch of New Yorkers? No more y'all? It's a damn shame to see people having no pride in their heritage, I hope they lose every football game because these people don't deserve to win. Have they forgotten how General Sherman raped the south? Do they not know how CSA soldiers were treated in Yankee prisons? Shame of them for betraying their history!

How about the Ole Miss Pussies. Wait, not P.C. enough.

I guess they could just go with Cats.

What did you think I meant? Get your minds out of the dirty south!!

Bobby, how do you know all those students are from Mississippi, or even from the South?

Even though i'm a northern yankee, i've always admired Southerners for their patriotism and pride in their southern heritage. Apparently, the southerners i was thinking of are gone. As i've always said, when the South goes, this country will be finished!

---You got a point, Princeton Review says that 32% of the students are out of state, of course, "out of state" can mean Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, and other places where the confederacy isn't politically incorrect.

"Even though i'm a northern yankee, i've always admired Southerners for their patriotism and pride in their southern heritage."

---Thanks, I didn't use "yankees" as a pejorative remark by the way nor am I someone who doesn't recognize the government of the United States. It's just that it's sad to lose our heritage, which is also happening at the University of Alabama where the "old south" festival of dressing like southern gentlemen and ladies is falling out of favor.

"Apparently, the southerners i was thinking of are gone. As i've always said, when the South goes, this country will be finished!"

---I think there's a lot of good people in the north that are also getting sick of political correctness, so maybe there's hope, Obama's current unpopularity should tell you something.

By the way, this is the mascot some students are proposing now.

It's some sort of really ugly crustacean sci-fi thing.

It seems things were better in the olden days. Time for southern democrats to rise again, or maybe even the dixiecrats?

And I'm only half joking.

2 points: The vote was not on whether to replace the mascot, but on whether students should have input on the replacement. It is the Ole Miss administration that exiled Col. Reb. The real shocker is that a quarter of the students who voted don't want to have any input into the next mascot.

Also, re the headline, MI is the abbreviation for Michigan. It's an easy mistake, as Michigan is one of the go-to states for PC idiocy. MS is Mississippi, MO is Missouri, MT is Montana.

Being an observant Northerner now living in the South, I can attest to the fact that most Southerners put on a good game face, but deep down, most are still very bigoted against Blacks.

re: Anon156: I too was transplanted to the South (Mobile Alabama) for 15 years and observed the exact same things. I am now living in Colorado and I am feeling much better.

You're right, there are. But what makes us disheartened is to see the South becoming PC'ized.

You may be right, and if that's the case, it is not without good reason. Another problem the South has is having northern liberals migrating south, since liberals are corrosive no matter where they are.

I'm bigoted against anyone that refuses to work, lives off the government and teaches their children to do the same.

Am I racists because the far majority of this type just happen to be black where I live?

I also notice that the black communities outside of the far south are much more respectable. Culture issues???

---That's true, and it's very depressing. There are groups that also want to change the Mississippi flag to this ugly thing.

Fortunately there was a referendum in 2001 and they lost. Still, if the majority of Mississippians don't learn to defend their traditions, it will be reconstruction all over again.

The problem is obviously with an ELDERLY gent who carries a cane. Ageism at its finest. Someone sue those ageist haters for age-related discrimination, post-haste!

Interesting how Anon156 and Anon258 are both PC-enforcers from the north who feel bad because when they lived in the south they were forced to read peoples' minds in order to know what others really thought below the surface as expressed in their words and acts. I feel your pain, you two Anonymous psychic warriors, for it must be an intolerable burden to take the sins of all other humans on your shoulders, especially when those sins are determined by your fabulous psychic mind-reading abilities! Poor mind-readers. We should all wish to have mind-readers just like you surrounding us at all times to set our inner-most, racial-unconcious thoughts straight. Thank you!

By the way, did I mention that political correctness is dead?

Sorry, Beaglescout, but you're completely off base on this one. It wasn't my psychic powers that caused me (anon156) to come to my conclusion. It's in everyday conversation where Whites refer to Blacks as niggers, Blacks wait submissively for Whites to cross their path instead of being assertive, and other very obvious and overt acts of NON-PC activity that a blind man couldn't miss.

I am the absolute LAST person who wants political correctness. PC to me means "pussy country" and not in the good way. The fact remains that in the deep South, racism still exists, and it's not some hidden thing. It's out there.

Odd claiming that the South is racist when it was the South that had an INTEGRATED army during the "Civil War". The South also elected the first Jews to the US Congress. In fact U.S. Grant a NORTHERN general, tried to expel Jews from Tennessee. So is the South racist? No seems that would be the North.
