Must not Portray Blacks as Puppets

Apparently white people and conservatives can be puppets. In the days of the old Soviet empire, it was routine for Communist propaganda to refer to pro-American governments anywhere as "puppets" and I never once at that time heard any objection to such language from their fellow Leftists.

But everybody knows that blacks are not really full people, so you cannot portray them as puppets. People might believe it! That, at any rate, seems to be the logic behind the latest furore in New Mexico:

"Several African-American organizations on Sunday demanded an apology from a statewide candidate for an advertisement they contend exploits racial stereotypes.

At issue is an direct mail ad okayed by Republican Demesia Padilla who is running for state treasurer. It's a cartoon depicting her opponent, Democrat James Lewis, as a puppet being handled by Democratic Governor Bill Richardson. Lewis is black.
