Trump Gives Full Support: ‘All In’ on Banning the Burning of US Flag
President Donald Trump threw his full support Saturday behind a Republican senator’s proposed constitutional amendment that allows Congress to ban the burning of the United States flag.
Trump praised the amendment on Twitter, saying he was “all in” on the proposal and calling it a “no brainer.”
“All in for Senator Steve Daines as he proposes an Amendment for a strong BAN on burning our American Flag. A no brainer!” Trump said.
Sen. Steve Daines of Montana and Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas — both Republicans — introduced the amendment on Friday, which was Flag Day, as The Hill pointed out.
“The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States,” the proposed amendment reads.
Daines released a statement on Friday, saying, “Our United States flag is a timeless symbol of liberty that tells the story of America, the story of our enduring pursuit of freedom.”
“Remembering the sacrifices of all who carried its colors into battle, our nation should always render the flag the honor and dignity it is due,” Daines added.

Unfortunately, enshrining certain symbols of the country reduces the freedom of individuals - and I really don't think that's an appropriate way to express our devotion to Freedom and Respect for our fellow citizens. It will be pointed to as an example of "common sense" restriction on Freedom of Expression, which will then be followed by whatever the next most popular "common sense" restriction is. Freedom of Speech - especially political speech - MUST be as closely held a value as the Flag that we believe stands for it.
I am a Trump supporter and will vote for him again in 2020. However, I have to disagree with him here. Burning the flag is a free expression of protest and banning it will have the effect of curtailing freedom in this country. But, if I were to be close enough to a flag burner I would punch him in the nose.
Count me in with two of the above comments. Burning the flag is an act of political speech and must be allowed under freedom of speech. And agree - if one hates this country enough to desecrate the flag, they should go live in another country. However I don't believe in violence as a protest, even if a punch in the nose would be satisfying.
Passing an Amendment to ban flag burning would be granting the flag-burners more importance than they are entitled to. I believe (and by all means tell me if I'm wrong) that an effective and constitutional method for limiting KKK crass-burnings has been to require that a permit for a fire be obtained. Why should we not require the same of would-be flag burners? There are good reasons for requiring fire permits, and a full sized flag set on fire is not a trivial hazard. Many flags are made from petroleum-based fabrics that melt as they burn, so that an accident could result in some spectator or passerby being badly burned by a fire that sticks to them.
Requiring permits would put the brakes on spontaneous idiocy, would remind flag-burners that they are members of a society that requires some degree of adherence to rules, and would put the flag-burners on all furs with the KKK....where they belong.
