Welcome to the Censorship Olympics

Under legislation by Tony Blair's Labour party

It beggars belief, but it can now be a criminal offence to use words like Games, Gold and Summer - or even a picture of the London skyline. The reason? An outrageous abuse of our laws to protect the profits of Olympic sponsors...

Britain is at the start of an experiment in the criminalisation of everyday speech; a locking down of the English language, with punishments for those who use it too freely.

In passing the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act of 2006, the Blair Government granted the organisers remarkable concessions. Most glaringly, the Act is bespoke legislation that breaks the principle of equality before the law.

For it has given privileges to the Olympics and its sponsors and to them alone. The Games' organisers can protect the Olympic trademarks, as any other organisation can protect theirs, but they can also control the use of words any business or shop, for example, may or may not associate with the Games. Along with bans on the use of the Olympic name, rings, motto and logo, the organisers have appropriated ordinary language.

The List A words include: 'Games', '2012' and 'twenty twelve'
At the organisers' behest, the Government told the courts they may wish to take particular account of anyone using two or more words from what it calls List A: `Games'; `Two Thousand and Twelve'; `2012'; and `twenty twelve'.

And the judges must also come down hard on anyone, even a charity, who takes a word from List A and joins it with one or more words from what is List B: `Gold'; `Silver'; `Bronze'; `London'; `medals'; `sponsors'; and `summer'. Common nouns are now private property.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games does not stop there. To cover all eventualities, it warns everyone in Britain against creating an `unlawful association' with the Games, which can be done without even mentioning the forbidden words!

Even the London skyline, believe it or not, is out of bounds if it is combined with, for example, an image of a runner carrying a torch.

And the punishments will not just be damages in the civil courts. The state has granted the police powers under the criminal law to enter `land or premises' and to `remove, destroy, conceal or erase any infringing article'.

This isn't a new website, but it's a clear, very clear example of the priorities politicaly correct nutjobs have. A site about reporting sexual assaults, but the policy won't let you mention race because it might reinforced negative stereotypes. So better to let a perp escape than offend someone, and more can get raped because these loser pc liberal nutjobs think offendding someone is worse than rape. What insane people. Liberals need to be removed from any and all positions of power and influence.

One more reason to ignore the Olympics. They are far more about money than about competition. It's time to scrap them.

Of course, there is something to stay about a weak-kneed government that would give in to the Olympic organizer's ridiculous demands.

Sounds about right for Britain today.

Better be careful if you print a calendar for 2012 and mention the summer season.

This is the problem you get when you get government picking winners and losers.

Remember, remember ...

Once again we see why Britain is being strangled by it's overhwelming addiction to the most extreme political correctness. It will be a refreshing change when the tens-of-millions of radical Muslims welcomed into Britain take complete control of that country, rather than just the large areas they now control.

Good riddance!

If i was the leader of a country, i would pull my athletes out of 2012 olympics and get other nations to start a rival game elsewhere. It seems fascism has even come to the olympics.

I am glad that I live in America where I can still say Fuck the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

If these games fail, I wonder if Britain can get Germany to pay for them?

BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS

Perhaps an Unofficial People's Competition For Truth Telling could be held? One could earn a 2011+1 City-On-The-Thames Ag Pendant and climb the dais to accept it.

Hell, here's a hipster slogan for t-shirts there: "/Britain". You're welcome.

To the anti-British/English comments above - it's a couple of US mega-corps that are dictating commercial terms in their sponsorships of the London Olympics - McDonalds and CocaCola (not otherwise known for promoting healthy activity)!!
Would that London 2012 could more resemble the London 1948 Olympic games!!

2:52, are you trying to say "mega" corporations are bad? They make their money by providing a service/product that people choose to want and how many jobs do they provide and how much tax revenues do they generate? You're foolish.

"...it's a couple of US mega-corps that are dictating commercial terms..."

Incorrect! The laws of Britain are passed by the govt of Britain!

All govts throughout history have had any number of individuals and organizations lobby them for favors, but it is the govt itself that chooses to accede to the requests or not. It is the govt that ultimately chooses whether and what to do.

If McD's told you to walk over a cliff, child, would you? Or would you choose differently?

Sheesh.

IIRC the Olympics gets special IP protection in most countries that host it in modern times.
I am pretty sure that Australia pased similar legislation for the Sydney Games....
It is basically passing-off protections on steroids.

Amusing that Americans posting here support strong-arm economic tactics employed by their own "mega corporations" but criticize the local governments for caving into it! This is the American version of neo-colonialism!

McDonalds and CocoCola have a HUGE responsibility for making Americans HUGE, and wherever they spread themselves like a virus around the world, they help make their infected populations equally huge and unhealthy. Yes, blame the consumer and exonerate the well-funded advertizer! Yet these same companies cynically impress their economic clout on sporting events to suggest that not only do they have the best advertizing opportunities, but that their products enhance, or are at least linked by association, to healthy sports.

Anon 3:22,

I am the Spirit of Advertising and thou art helpless before me. I commandeth thee to buy tin foil and shield thine sensibilities by placing it on thine empty head, save for thine ears so that thee may hear the laughter at thine foolishness; this is the only way for those who are preternaturally helpless. Do it! You must obey! You have no choice!

I wonder how many of the Olympic athletes actually eat McDonald's or drink Coke?

5:55 I forsooth believe thou wert well deep in thy cups whilst fingering thy magic link-board to the wide world that extendeth beyond thy lonesome dark grotto!

8:58AM It's not so much the Olympic athletes (who are hardly likely to over-indulge in burgers and cokes, or pizzas or hotdogs, chips, etc.), but for the spectators to make the sub-conscious or subliminal link that eating such products and watching such activities aren't contradictory in some obvious way.
