A new method of cracking down on free speech

Apple can stop sexting on the iPhone through a PATENT!
"IPhone maker Apple can stop people from sending and receiving "objectionable" messages better know as sexting.

A patent, which was first submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2008, is aimed at stamping out sexting on Apple's iPhone, The Daily Telegraph said. However, the patent will also enable Apple to view every iPhone user's texts.

According to tech blog TechCrunch, the background info for the patent states in part that currently there is "no way to monitor and control text communications to make them user appropriate.

The push to monitor texts is another example of Apple boss Steve Jobs protecting the "family friendly" brand.

However, the push for further smartphone monitoring has worried privacy groups and many users as phone makers such as Apple collect a variety of data, from geolocation data through to call times and credit card details to pitch ads and other information at phone users.

This will be good for rival products, I guess. Steve Jobs may have jumped the shark.

I find it amusing how, after reading stories like this one, there are those who are so foolish as to think there's still something called privacy. Privacy is now nothing more than an illusion. And if you believe you actually have it, then you're as dumb as they believe you are.

Anonymous 1:58 has it right. Every text, every cell call (and perhaps land line call too) can be released to 'authorized' parties. Your 'anonymous' posts anywhere on the internet can be traced without too much difficulty.

Privacy? It's a myth.

"Steve Jobs may have jumped the shark." From a privacy standpoint, yes, from a business standpoint the guy can do no wrong. To buy the I-phone you have to go with ATT, the absolute worst carrier, yet people want the phone so they put up with substandard service.

He's made a brilliant move, preempting Google from doing pretty much the same thing but for different (stated) purposes.
Google'd just love to get their hands on any and all text messages sent by Android phones, and link them with peoples' profiles that Google builds up on them.

They're not (yet?) legally permitted to inject advertising in those messages before transmitting them on to the recipient (or sending spam to phone users based on the content of messages sent or received in the past) but they're no doubt lobbying to make that a legal option.

This patent will prevent them from doing so for a considerable period, or until they pay protection money to Apple, and that won't be cheap.
Of course Google might just decide to buy Apple, if Apple will let them.

Like the Internet, teens will route around outages and find a clear path.

The problem is not in the technology, but with the parenting. Kids are just not being taught the morality and ethics of prior generations. parents are more concerned with being "friends" than "parents" and they wonder why their kids are so screwed up.

Just remember that the parents' elderly fate will rest in the hands of their children.
