And the word "Muslim" is not mentioned
The full news report from "The Times" of London below:
"German politicians are dismayed about the desecration of a monument to tens of thousands of homosexuals persecuted under the Nazis that was opened less than three months ago in Berlin. Police said they were looking for the perpetrators who attacked the monument, a large grey cube in the Tiergarten park in Central Berlin, at the weekend.
The vandals smashed a window through which viewers could see a picture of two men kissing and ripped down fencing. Police said it was unclear if the motive for the attack was political. "This cowardly and shocking act is an attack on the image we have of ourselves as a tolerant and open city," said Frank Henkel, a senior politician in the Berlin assembly and a member of Chancellor Merkel's Christian Democrat party. Green Party politicians also condemned the attacks, which they described as a warning sign that homophobia was still rampant in German society.
The monument to homosexuals persecuted in the 1930s and 1940s was unveiled in May. About 50,000 gay men were convicted by Nazi courts; some were castrated and thousands were sent to concentration camps. "This attack is shocking, appalling. To see such a thing today after all the suffering and horror we had to go through, it is cruel," said Rudolf Brazda, who survived imprisonment in Buchenwald concentration camp for being gay. "People don't want to accept that there are people who are different from them by nature," he said in a statement issued by Germany's LSVD gay and lesbian association.
Klaus Wowereit, the openly gay Mayor of Berlin who unveiled the monument, took part in a vigil there yesterday. Nazi laws were used to prosecute homosexuals in Germany until 1969.

I do not know who did it but it was predictable that the world's chief persecutors of homosexuals were not mentioned. That no group was named as suspect may in fact indicate that the authorities DO suspect Muslim involvement. They would be unlikely to miss the opportunity of blaming "Neo-Nazis" etc. otherwise.

Wow, that's ironic given that homosexuals were quite common within the SA (the brownshirts) and the Hitler youth, including Nazism's first leader, Ernst Roehm. This article makes a strong case that homosexuality was one of the motivating factors in the formation of the Nazi party. In fact, the article was written because of the revisionist history of this particular memorial.
I usually agree with the writer of "Tongue Tied", but Iam going to disagree with your take on this article. To me, if no suspects have been named, it is appropriate that they should not mention any particular groups. While your assertion that no group is mentioned because Muslim radicals are suspected may be correct, this could also be a rare case of responsible reporting.
Two men kissing, GAG!
It seems those on the Left will never understand that you can not legislate morality. You can't force people to accept something they truly believe is wrong, no matter how many laws you put into effect. You would think the German people whould've learned that by now.
There is still a strong and active Nazi element in todays Germany. Why? Because many people still believe in it and obviously want it to exist. So this group has to be considered "one of" the prime suspects.
Another prime suspect would be Muslims. There is also in todays Germany, an active (and growing) radical Muslim element, and it's widely known they "hate" homosexuals.
Then there is the radical, activist homosexual community itself. What better way to get attention for your cause, and get even more pro-gay laws and restrictions passed? It wouldn't be the first time they've used this type of tactic.
And ed, you're right about Ernst Roehm, which is why he was assassinated.
anonymous,
The "why" in your last sentence was a bit vague. Did you mean that he was assassinated because he was a rival to Hitler, a homosexual, or both?
I'm with d rock on this one.
To speculate on possible perps without any evidence would be irresponsible - and would normally be condemned on this site - and yet that is exactly what JJR seems to be doing.
It is also entirely possible (IMHO) that the vandals were protesting the implied support of an offensive display/lifestyle rather than the actual murders it was meant to commemorate. Surely it's possible to seperate the two - along the lines of:
"I disagree with their lifestyle choice but I abhor the Nazi atrocities against them."
