We read:
""A group of sociologists did a poll in Arizona about the new immigration law. Sixty percent said they were in favor, and 40 percent said, 'No hablo English.'"
That joke in class has Robert Engler, a 12-year sociology professor at Roosevelt University, fighting for his career.
It elicited two written complaints in the spring of 2010 as ethnically offensive, and what followed was a protracted argument that eventually included the termination of his employment from the fall semester. Administrators have also discontinued his course "City and Citizenship," previously a requirement for graduation.
Now his attorney, Doug Ibendahl, is about to file suit. Ibendahl believes university administrators are dragging their feet over a "harmless joke that would not be considered offensive by any reasonable standard."
Ibendahl added that Engler has an unblemished record, and the joke was directly related to the day's topic of discussion.
"Humor is used by many professors to better engage students. … We can expect a substantial chilling effect on academic freedom and our First Amendment Rights. That hurts all of us, and possibly other students most of all," he said.

The left does not understand humor any more than it understands fiscal responsibility. As long as the Left controls our academic institutions, we will continue to suffer these kinds of frivolous lawsuits.

The lawsuit is not frivolous, the dismissal of the professor was.
The problem as I see it is that some people saw it as too close to the truth, and not as a joke. Funny how telling a joke can get a teacher fired, but trying to get rid of a bad teacher can take years if they have tenure.
Remember that guy who compared the victims of 9/11 to "Little Eichmans." It took forever to fire him, and he did not get fired for that comment, he got fired for plagiarism. The he sued and he won.
But say "no hable englis", a reality with many illegals, and it's a whole other ballgame.

"To conquer a nation without the use of military force, one must first control the minds of their young..." --- Karl Marx
And in order to do that, one must first control academia. He sure knew what he was talking about.
The he sued and he won.
Ward Churchill is the professor of which you speak and while he did win a judgment of $1 (one dollar) against the school, the judgment was appealed and overturned. That decision was appealed but upheld.
Churchill won the initial court case, but eventually lost the lawsuit.
What happened to tenure? Oh yeah, I forgot, that only applies to offensive liberal professors.
I guess free speech only belongs to the privlaged liberal eletists
