Trump's call for high-skill immigration is no 'hate speech'

Would he go hard or would he go soft? That was the mainstream media template for judging Donald Trump's speech on immigration in Phoenix last Wednesday.

The verdict: hard. "How Trump got from Point A to Point A on immigration," was the headline in the Washington Post's recap.

Similarly, the often insightful Talking Points Memo blogger Josh Marshall characterized Trump's discourse as "hate speech." "Precisely what solution Trump is calling for is almost beside the point."

But that's precisely wrong. Marshall found the Phoenix crowd's raucous shouts distasteful, and so did I. But a search through Trump's prepared text and his occasional digressions fails to disclose anything that can be fairly characterized as "hate speech."

What it does disclose includes some serious critiques and proposals for recasting our immigration laws which almost everyone agrees need changing.

Start near the end, with the tenth of Trump's ten points. He notes that we've admitted 59 million immigrants since the last major revision of immigration law in 1965, and that "many of these arrivals have greatly enriched our country." No asides about criminals or rapists.

Then he proposes a major policy change, "to select immigrants based on their likelihood of success in U.S. society, and their ability to be financially self-sufficient ... to choose immigrants based on merit, skill and proficiency."

That's not racism or hate speech, and it's not out of line with American tradition, or even current law.

it is racist on the part of those calling it racist. They are assuming the Hispanics can't be contributing members of the U.S. economy.

I am surprised that he hasn't attacked the anchor baby issue. It should have been removed from the constitution decades ago. That issue is a major sticking point in deporting illegals.

Considering we're all part of the human race, racism can't exist. It only exists in the minds of demented pinheads that use skin colour or "minority group" connotations to make their claims.

If anything, minority groups have proven to be far more "racist" than any other, purporting themselves to be oppressed in some way.

For example, complaints of Dutch, Norwegian or Icelandic peoples emigrating to ANY other country can't be seen as racist, because of their white skin.

Complaints of Chinese immigration is somehow okay to be labelled racist because their skin is considered yellow and, although they vastly outnumber most European (American, Australian) populations, the small portion of immigrants is seen as a minority group.

This also goes for Islamic Middle East. We know they're dangerous and should be deported back home over their country and thrown out the doors at 30,000 feet, but are a "minority group with dark skin" and, the pollies are scared of 2 things: their inherent Jihadist nature and the desire not to be called racist because they want to appear PC and keep their votes.

I don't think we'll see the end of this PC rubbish and gain some sanity until the regressive Left and cultural Marxists follow the same 30,000 foot exit over Antarctica.

It is time to impose our law over all who decide to live in Australia and let it be known that we will not modify law to appease non-sectarian cultures regardless of their belief or origin and this need to be hammered into the heads of all politicians and parties that their large minority constituency is not entitled to special benefits if they keep voting for them. Our politicians are elected to represent all citizens not minorities because they pour money into the coffers.

Australia's politicians need to step up and represent all Australians not just a few will to pay for their attention.
