Va. DMV Recalls Plate with very obscure implications
We read:
"The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday recalled a license plate that appeared to have coded references glorifying Adolf Hitler.
The vanity plate, which read "14CV88," was the subject of complaints after photos were posted online.
The "88" is sometimes a coded reference to Heil Hitler, as each word begins with the eighth letter of the alphabet. The "14" is thought to stand for the number of words in a white supremacist credo. The "CV" is an apparent reference to the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations was among the groups offended by the plate. The truck bearing the plates also featured graphics of the Confederate flag and the phrase "Everything I ever needed to know about Islam I learned on 9/11."

The DMV may be able to recall the plate, but not the images on the truck. Nor can it recall the underlying attitudes of the owner.
Only a fellow white supremacist would recognize what 14CV88 means. I find bigots fascinating yet I was only able to recognize 88. So the DMV is wrong here.
As for ""Everything I ever needed to know about Islam I learned on 9/11," I believe that falls outside DMV jurisdiction. After all, I did not see the DMV persecuting people with the FCUK BUSH bumper-sticker, and no, I did not misspell "FCUK," that's how they write the f word nowadays.
I hope the ACLU defends that guy, this has first amendment written all over it.

I'd say only conspiracy theorists would.
I sincerely doubt whether any "white supremacist" ever thought of that sign until they were told it was some sort of secret message by a conspiracy theorist in an episode just like this one (or maybe this is that first such episode even).

---Well, from the crime documentaries I've seen on The HIstory Channel I assume that all gangs, neo-nazis, etc, are heavily into symbolism. Skinheads for example have to earn their red shoelaces by spilling blood.

I have some very Godly and upright friends who are "Sons of Confederate Veterans" who would be quite offended by this accusation and association. SCV are men who are descendants of those who fought as Confederate soldiers, and who rightly honor their contribution to history.
Everyone knows the logic behind 14/88. I don't understand how they can ban it, though. Any number can be a code in a number of ways. Unless the plate actually spells out something offensive it should be left as it is.
And the big sticker. Well that's just silly. If an ignorant person want's to make a point of his lack of knowledge, so be it. At least the rest of us know what we're dealing with then.
