"Obesity" to be banned?

About time. It has been way over-used. It was once only used for grossly fat people, not people of middling weight
"Let's say you were carrying a few extra pounds -- would you rather be labeled "obese" or "fat"? City officials in Liverpool, England, evidently prefer the latter and are considering banning the word obesity from all official communications.

It's all because they feel that the word obese is too offensive, especially when it comes to kids. Officials at Liverpool's town hall would rather use the term "unhealthy weight" because it doesn't stigmatize overweight children as much.... "The idea is that obesity has a negative connotation behind it," he added....

Tam Fry of the obesity prevention charity the Child Growth Foundation certainly doesn't think so. "I can see where the children are coming from and the word carries a stigmatization but unfortunately some times schoolchildren have to be taught the realities of life," he told the Daily Mail. "If you have a problem, particularly when it's as serious as this, it needs addressing."

It's not certain whether the change will go through -- the proposal will be considered over the next few months -- but a spokesperson for the Liverpool city council insisted there would only be a subtle difference if it did.

The term "unhealthy weight" is a bit nuts too. Anorexics have an unhealthy weight but they sure aren't fat. What's wrong with "fat", anyway? Too simple and not judgmental enough, I guess.

Funny that we are allowed to be judgmental about people's weight but are not allowed to judgmental about other things -- such as homosexuality. And, because of AIDS, homosexuality is a lot more likely to kill you than being fat is.

If something shouldn't have a negative connotation then how can it be bad? If it isn't bad then why is the government trying to change it? Talk about confusing, especially for the poor fat kids. "If there is no "negative connotation" with me being fat, leave me alone and stop trying to change me!"

... in Africa, there are numerous famines, but plenty of Aids to go around.

"A lot more people will have health problems because of a poor diet, including being "fat", than from AIDS (at least in western countries".

Your statement is factually wrong. A lot of people will have health problems because "of a lot of different factors", what they eat being only one of those factors. Except for a few mindless, stary-eyed liberals in Manhattan and San Francisco, (who are phonies anyway) no one has what the FoodNazi's consider "a proper" diet. What all those people also don't have is their "right" to make their own choices in life, just one more thing being taken away from them.

The so-called "health issue", like all the other things being pushed by the Left, has nothing to do with health, and everything to do with their main objective, CONTROL!

England should ban itself.

It won't be long before the term England is verbotten as well, Anon 514. England is too closely associated with English which would be offensive to non-english speakers who are residing (not necessarily legal citizens) of the UK (soon to be banned as well as Kingdom has a negative connotation as well). England might also be banned because it is also offensive to the Irish and Scottish (although more likely the first reason because most defining themselves as Scot or Irish are white and the govt could give a shit about their opinions unless they are queers or criminals)

---I agree, when the fashion industry fires a size-4 model for being too fat, you know that weight perception has changed not only in America but England as well.

In the link you can see the photo retouching, notice they forgot to alter the head. With the fashion industry firing size-4's, no wonder so many people feel fat or obese. It's like the fashionazis wants us to fit in some impossible computer-generated idea.

Wasn't "obese" adopted because of the negative connotations of "fat"? And doesn't "unhealthy" have negative connotations? Maybe we should start using "larger than average" or "pleasantly plump"?

Guess what?

Medical science has discovered:

AIDS is related to obesity.

You acquire both conditions from constantly being "stuffed"!

Last year I was taking an online class and one of my fellow students was in health care working at a hospital. The word obese was mentioned and I replied that the word was used too much now as most people are not obese but just overweight. She replied back that people as little as 10 pounds overweight now are referred to as obese. The word has been corrupted.

Nice that you your your so-called "facts" from anecdotes.

Anon 6:59 is correct. The word "obese" is no longer related to health, but to politics, especially since Mrs. Obummer got bored and decided to do something, anything, to get on TV. Has anyone checked her thighs lately?

That was the perfect time to reply, "I rest my case."
